The St. Louis Cardinals pulled off an exciting win on Wednesday over the New York Mets, winning in extra innings on a walk-off hit by star shortstop Masyn Winn.<\/a> Winn also shined defensively in the Cardinals’ win over the Mets. Now, St. Louis is 4-2 to start the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

However, after the game, Winn was involved in a scary incident. According to a team official, Winn had a single car accident on Interstate 64 due to wet pavement from rain in the St. Louis area.<\/p>\n

Fortunately though, the Gold Glove winner was okay and did not suffer any severe injuries<\/a> as a result of the accident.<\/p>\n

“Following today’s game, Masyn Winn was involved in a single-car accident (on Interstate 64) due to wet pavement,” the statement said. “Masyn, who was alone in the vehicle, was attended by local police and Cardinals security and medical staff. He was examined at a nearby hospital and suffered no serious injuries.”<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Winn did not suffer any severe injuries and checked out okay at the hospital, but it was certainly a scary incident. Losing Winn for any amount of time would have been a big blow for the Cardinals, who are off to a strong start this season despite entering a rebuild.<\/p>\n

Winn suffered a torn meniscus last season and was shut down in September as the Cardinals were falling out of contention. The Cardinals certainly missed his presence defensively.<\/p>\n

Though he is off to a slow start offensively this year, they need his presence at shortstop and in the lineup. Without him, the Cardinals would be lacking a centerpiece in their lineup.<\/p>\n

But a scary incident<\/a> such as this puts things into perspective. The Cardinals have had three active players pass away dating back to 2002, when Darryl Kile died of a heart attack. St. Louis also lost pitcher Josh Hancock and former top prospect Oscar Taveras as a result of car crashes.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Winn’s accident wasn’t too severe, and he should be good to go for Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, but it’s certainly a scary situation, and it’s a good thing that Winn is okay after what took place.<\/p>\n

Winn is hitting .160 with a .462 OPS to start the season. Wednesday’s walk-off hit produced his first RBI of the new season.
