KANSAS CITY, Mo. \u2014 Kansas City catcher Carter Jensen was removed from the Royals\u2019 starting lineup for Thursday game with the Minnesota Twins after he overslept.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t wake up to my alarm. Slept through it,” Jensen told The Kansas City Star and other outlets. “Don\u2019t really have an excuse \u2014 nor should I. It sucks. It happens. I feel like I let teammates down, coaches down. Just learn from it and just know it won\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jensen eventually arrived, but not early enough to prepare adequately to start the game. He did end up coming in as Kansas City\u2019s catcher in the ninth inning of the Royals’\u00a05-1 loss.<\/p>\n
Salvador Perez, who was expecting to be Kansas City\u2019s designated hitter Thursday, ended up catching the first eight innings.<\/p>\n
\u201cFirst and foremost, I\u2019m glad Carter\u2019s OK,\u201d Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino told reporters. \u201cI mean, that was kind of the initial thought when you\u2019re trying to get a hold of his parents and everything like that \u2014 just make sure he\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pasquantino said Jensen, a 22-year-old rookie, needs to learn from this experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are some things that cannot happen, and that\u2019s one of them,\u201d Pasquantino said. \u201cSo he\u2019s going to have to wear it on the chin \u2014 same way anybody would have to. It can\u2019t happen, and hopefully it doesn\u2019t happen again. But it\u2019s one of those things that you just can\u2019t afford mistakes like that in this game. Just got to move forward the best that he can. I know he feels really bad.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know it was not his favourite drive to the field this morning, but it wasn\u2019t our favourite morning either, trying to figure out what was going on. He\u2019ll learn from it, grow a little bit. We\u2019re here for him, though. It\u2019s not like anybody\u2019s mad at him. Things happen.
