Bucknor left the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"f8a579c6-08b9-7584-141d-317d0645763b\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/tb\/tampa-bay-rays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>&#8216; game with the <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"4750d73d-d92e-b390-758c-2c7b44a810db\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/mil\/milwaukee-brewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> on Wednesday after a foul tip hit him in the face mask.<\/p>\n<p>The game was in the second inning when Tampa Bay&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/41674\/nick-fortes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Fortes<\/a> swung at a 100 mph fastball from Milwaukee&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/5080761\/jacob-misiorowski\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Misiorowski<\/a> and hit a ball that went backward and struck Bucknor.<\/p>\n<p>Bucknor, 63, immediately turned around and went down on his knees as Brewers catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/39895\/william-contreras\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Contreras<\/a> checked on him. After Brewers training staff came to the field and consulted with him, Bucknor left the field.<\/p>\n<p>Editor&#8217;s Picks<a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48364653\/bucknor-spotlight-again-missed-call-brewers-rays\" class=\"img-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/r1636957_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&#038;w=130&#038;h=130&#038;scale=crop&#038;location=center.jpeg\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chad Fairchild, who had been working as the first-base umpire, took over behind the plate after Bucknor&#8217;s departure as part of a transition to a three-man crew.
