Coming into the year, the pitching was seen as a problem, but the offensive attack was supposed to be a strength for this team.

However, through the first six games, San Diego is hitting a combined .204 as a team. This could see the front office try to make some changes, potentially even a trade.

Could Padres Trade For James Wood?

As the Padres’ front office looks for different ways to improve the roster, the idea of another blockbuster trade is always floating around. Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller has been known for his aggressiveness in trades, and we could potentially see it happen again.

According to MLB writer Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report, the Padres are a possible landing spot for Washington Nationals slugger James Wood in a trade.

Why Padres Should Trade For James Wood

If the Nationals are looking to possibly move Wood in a deal, San Diego should be all over this. Wood was originally drafted by the Padres, but was sent out when the team acquired star outfielder Juan Soto in 2020.

Trading for Wood would right the wrong of sending him away originally, and this could be massively beneficial for the team going forward. Wood has become one of the better sluggers in baseball, and he could infuse this San Diego lineup with his power.

The one big knock on Wood is his swing-and-miss issues, but teams could always try to work with him on this matter. But his exit velocity and hard-hit rate both landed in the 98th percentile last season, showing his worth.

The outfielder made his first All-Star team last season, and he remains only 23 years old. Last season, Wood hit .256 with 31 home runs and 94 runs batted in for Washington. playing in 157 games.

San Diego needs more youth from its star players, especially since Manny Machado (33) and Xander Bogaerts (33) are only getting older. The only true stars that the team has under the age of 30 are Fernando Tatis Jr. (27) and Jackson Merrill (22).

Age tends to catch up to guys as they hit their mid-30s, and the Padres have been lucky so far. But this could be a way for San Diego to protect itself a bit, bringing in a player still entering his prime.

Wood could be part of the Padres organization for years to come, and even if it were to cost a ton to land him, it seems like it could be worth it. Giving the team more offense could work out well, especially given the struggles from the starting rotation to open the new season.

San Diego has to do whatever it can to maximize the winning window right now, and adding another All-Star entering his prime to this roster could help. The goal of this franchise is to win a World Series, and Wood could push them closer.

If the Nationals are looking to move on from Wood this year, the Padres should be among the most aggressive teams. While San Diego doesn’t exactly need an outfielder right now, Ramón Laureano is set to hit free agency this offseason, giving Wood a permanent home for the foreseeable future.

Wood is still pre-arbitration. He’ll be eligible for arbitration in 2028, and won’t be a free agent until 2031.

Sign up to our free newsletter and follow us on Facebook and X/Twitter for the latest news.

The San Diego Padres’ season has started slow, with both the pitching and offense bringing issues.
