Playing shortstop for the Rainiers, Emerson raced to his right to backhand a grounder. Then, all in one fluid motion, he threw across his body on the run and fired a strike to first base for an inning-ending out.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stop it Colt!!! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oC1cphhMPx\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/oC1cphhMPx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tacoma Rainiers (@RainiersLand) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RainiersLand\/status\/2039911165808283981?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">April 3, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Emerson\u2019s highlight-reel play came just two days after he signed <a href=\"https:\/\/sports.mynorthwest.com\/mlb\/seattle-mariners\/report-seattle-mariners-colt-emerson-95m-extension\/1844263\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a reported eight-year, $95 million contract extension<\/a> with Seattle that runs through 2033 and includes a ninth-year club option for 2034. It\u2019s currently the largest contract ever for a player who\u2019s yet to reach the major leagues, surpassing the eight-year, $82 million deal that Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio signed in December 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/spotrac\/status\/2038989734945439866\" rel=\"nofollow\">according to Spotrac<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Emerson, a 20-year-old shortstop prospect, is viewed as a cornerstone of the Mariners\u2019 future. A 2023 first-round draft pick out of John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, he\u2019s\u00a0ranked by both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MLB Pipeline<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/rankings\/2026-top-100-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Baseball America<\/a>\u00a0as the No. 7 overall prospect in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>The left-handed-hitting Emerson rocketed up multiple levels of the minor leagues last season, slashing .285\/.383\/.458 with 16 home runs, six triples, 28 doubles and an .842 OPS in 130 games between High-A Everett, Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Tacoma.<\/p>\n<p>This spring, Emerson slashed .268\/.340\/.488 with two homers, one triple and one double in 41 Cactus League at-bats. He\u2019s beginning the season in Tacoma, but many expect him to make his MLB debut at some point in 2026.
