Isaac Lohman is a St. Louis Cardinals fan and he has a dream job . . . he\u2019s a batboy for the Cardinals this summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always been a big baseball fan,\u201d said the 19-year-old Lohman, who is the son of Bob and Cyra Lohman of Waterloo. He is also the grandson of Norbert and Bernice Lohman, who live in Teutopolis.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to be an event attendant,\u201d said Lohman. \u201cI saw online this position had opened up and I got an interview. I thought it didn\u2019t go well, but apparently it did.\u201d<\/p>\n
There are three bat boys for the home team and Loman is one of those.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo of us work each game,\u201d said Lohman. \u201cIt\u2019s usually one out of three games I don\u2019t have to work. We usually know our schedule a couple of weeks in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n
This is the first year he\u2019s been a bat boy and will probably work 50 to 55 games and he does get paid to work.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe get there early before the game for batting practice, in case they need water. Then during the game, we pick up bats and balls and bring balls to the umpires.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the game we do laundry and hang the uniforms back up in their locker. We also clean their cleats.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lohman usually works around eight or nine hours a day.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe get there a few hours before the game and stay a few hours afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lohman talked about being around the players.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re all pretty nice guys. There are no problems.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn the knob of their bat it has their number. They\u2019ll bring one bat to the plate. I\u2019ll grab one from the dugout in case that one breaks. But nothing weird has happened yet.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf two of us work, one person does bats and the other one does baseballs. The one on baseballs has a bucket of balls by us. The umpire will hold up a hand how many he needs and basically you run out the baseballs to him.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a player bats, you wait for the him to get on or get out because then you pick up the elbow guards or shin guards they\u2019ve taken off.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lohman talked about what his favorite part of the job has been.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think my favorite thing is seeing that all the players are just normal guys,\u201d said Lohman. \u201cAt the end of the day, they all enjoy being around each other and it\u2019s just fun being there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Do the bat boys still work when the Cardinals are on the road?<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they\u2019re out of town we don\u2019t do much. One thing we do when they are out of town is when they are coming back from the last away game, we have to get their equipment. They\u2019re equipment will come back on a plane. We then unload it off the trucks, their bats, their gloves, etc.. We unload it all and get it ready for the next day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lohman has a brother Noah who is a senior in high school.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s not a big sports fan so he wouldn\u2019t be interested in working the games. He\u2019s going to Murray State for music.\u201d<\/p>\n
Currently Lohman is attending SIU-E majoring in data analytics and a minor in Spanish.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully down the road I can work for a baseball organization in their analytics department.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lohman was an event attendant for the Cardinals in previous years working upstairs keeping the stadium clean for the fans.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an advancement,\u201d said Lohman. \u201cI\u2019m just starting to get to know all the players.
