The Abilene Cowgirls softball team dropped their season opening games to the visiting Topeka High Lady Trojans on Tuesday evening.\u00a0 Abilene would score their only runs of the doubleheader in the opener as they fell 14-2.\u00a0\u00a0 They would then be shut out and lose game two by a score of 10-0<\/p>\n
In the opener, Topeka High took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning aided by a Kenslee Young out of the park homerun.\u00a0 The Cowgirls responded in the bottom of the first when back-to-back singles by Josie Keener and Joelle Nichols would be followed by an RBI groundout by Hallie Johnson, and a RBI single by Charlie Elliott. With a 3-2 lead after the first inning, the Lady Trojans would pull away for good with the 14-2 victory as they would go on to score three runs in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and six runs in the fourth inning. \u00a0<\/p>\n
All three Abilene hits in the game would come in the first inning.\u00a0 Starting Cowgirl pitcher Hallie Johnson was charged with the loss in 3.1 innings pitched while giving up 13 runs on 10 hits. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Game two of the double header would see Topeka High cruise to a 10-0 five inning victory behind a combined strong pitching performances from starting pitcher Kenslee Young and reliever Adrianna Adame.\u00a0\u00a0 In all the two pitchers would give up only two hits in the shutout performance.<\/p>\n
Cowgirls starting pitcher KaiLee Crane would keep the Lady Trojans scoreless through the first two innings before giving up two runs in the third inning, and seven runs in the fourth inning.\u00a0\u00a0 Relief pitcher Josie Keener then allowed the final two runs of the game in the fifth inning\u00a0 that would lead to the 10-0 final score. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Abilene would collect only a pair of hits in the game by senior Lizzie Brooks, and sophomore Zoey Bruggman.\u00a0\u00a0 With the losses, the Cowgirls dropped to 0-4 on the young season and will next play at home on Thursday night against NCKL foe Concordia.<\/p>\n
