SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 The Giants announced on Friday afternoon that right-handed reliever Jos\u00e9 Butt\u00f3 has a blood clot in his right arm and will undergo a procedure to remove it later today.<\/p>\n
Butt\u00f3, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on Thursday<\/a>, does not yet have a timeline to return. The team will provide an additional update on Saturday.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the very least, it\u2019s peace of mind of what\u2019s going on,\u201d said manager Tony Vitello. \u201cI don\u2019t have enough history \u2014 I know a little bit about it \u2014 but it seems like this is something that\u2019s occurred before he was with the Giants, or at least symptoms of it. So, maybe this has been building up for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n Butt\u00f3, 28, was removed from Wednesday\u2019s series finale against the San Diego Padres due to right arm fatigue. The right-hander faced eight batters and recorded one out, walking four batters and allowing four runs.<\/p>\n More concerning than the erratic command was the drop in velocity. Butt\u00f3\u2019s fastball typically sits in the mid-90s, but he barely touched 90 mph by the end of Wednesday\u2019s outing.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s a very, very, very well-liked and well-respected guy. Everyone was concerned right away, and I think the fact it\u2019s not worst-case scenario \u2014 or it could be worse \u2014 is good. Long story short, time will tell if it\u2019s a decent layoff or an extended layoff,\u201d Vitello said.<\/p>\n With Butt\u00f3 hitting the injured list, right-hander Blade Tidwell was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento recorded the first save of his career<\/a>, pitching three scoreless innings against his old team to secure the Giants\u2019 7-2 win.<\/p>\n \u201cHe wanted to be on that club to start the year \u2014 our club \u2014 as bad as you can possibly imagine,\u201d Vitello said following Thursday\u2019s win. \u201cHe\u2019s a guy that you can tell when the emotions are there. He wears that intensity on his sleeve, and it didn\u2019t work out. I don\u2019t like the circumstances that caused it, but I do like the fact he stayed ready.
