The Minnesota Twins<\/a> do not have many bright spots as the 2026 season progresses after the organization traded away much of its roster at last year\u2019s trade deadline.<\/p>\n

However, one major piece that remains is center fielder Byron Buxton, who continues to serve as the face of the franchise. The 32\u2011year\u2011old veteran has spent his entire career with the Twins after being selected second overall in the 2012 MLB<\/a> Draft.<\/p>\n

Over 12 seasons, Buxton has collected two All-Star selections, one Gold Glove, Platinum Glove and Silver Slugger Award. Few players possess his level of talent, yet the biggest issue throughout his career has always been staying on the field.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Buxton finally showed what he could do over the course of a full season. In 126 games last year, he posted a .264 batting average, .327 on base percentage, .878 OPS, 35 home runs and 83 RBIs. If the Twins hope to reach their ceiling this season, keeping Buxton healthy remains their top priority.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Buxton suffered an injury just one week into the regular season on Friday during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>. He was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning on the right forearm.<\/p>\n

Buxton was removed from the game immediately, with outfielder James Outman entering in his place. For a moment, it appeared Buxton had suffered another setback in what has been a career frequently disrupted by injuries.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, that was not the case. Moments later, the Twins announced that Buxton had been diagnosed with a right forearm contusion and that X-rays came back negative (h\/t Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic).<\/p>\n

That is very good news for Buxton, who avoided a fracture. He may not return to action immediately, but his next chance to suit up will come on Saturday in another matchup with Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

Buxton will look to get back on track offensively when he returns, as he has collected just four hits in his first 25 plate appearances to start the 2026 season. Still, the fact that he likely will not require a stint on the injured list is the most important development for Minnesota.<\/p>\n
