Fresh off of a World Series appearance and an offseason full of impressive signings, the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> looked primed to start the 2026 season strong. But the reigning American League champions have already dropped series to the Colorado Rockies<\/a> and the Chicago White Sox<\/a>; a pair of base-running and fielding errors made Saturday’s loss to the White Sox especially frustrating.<\/p>\n

This frustration was felt by no one more than catcher Tyler Heineman, the lone perpetrator of those pivotal errors, who was in tears after the loss.<\/p>\n

After making one costly error on Friday and two on Saturday, Heineman got emotional after the game, saying, “The last two games, those losses, they’re on me. Sugarcoat it any way you want to, (yeah) there’s other things going on, but they’re on me” (h\/t Ben Nicholson-Smith, Sportsnet).<\/p>\n

Heineman, a 34-year-old journeyman catcher, was expected to perform only as the backup to Alejandro Kirk this season. But Kirk suffered a fractured left thumb on a foul tip while behind the plate during Friday’s contest against the White Sox, thrusting Heineman right into the spotlight.<\/p>\n

After coming in as Kirk’s replacement on Friday, Heineman made a poor throw on a bunt in the bottom of the tenth inning that allowed the tying run to score; it would’ve been the final out of the game had he thrown more accurately. Instead, with the game now tied and a runner on second, outfielder Tristan Peters laced a walk-off single into right field to win it for Chicago.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, Heineman didn’t fare any better. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Heineman was thrown out trying to tag up from second to third on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly. The inning ended with Vladimir Guerrero Jr<\/a>. due up next to bat.<\/p>\n

Then, down 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Heineman sailed a throw down the third base line in the middle of a rundown and two runs came around to score for the White Sox. The Blue Jays would go on to lose the game 6-3.<\/p>\n

With so many variables involved in every game, it’s very rare that any one player is truly responsible for a loss. But each of Heineman’s errors came late in the game and halted momentum for the Blue Jays, so it’s understandable that he would feel responsible for the defeats.<\/p>\n

The Blue Jays have yet to provide a clear timeline on Kirk’s recovery from his fractured finger. At least for the moment, Heineman is the club’s primary catcher.<\/p>\n
