{"id":664273,"date":"2026-04-05T08:02:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-05T08:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/664273\/"},"modified":"2026-04-05T08:02:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-05T08:02:17","slug":"phillies-snatch-another-win-off-the-rockies-behind-a-solid-outing-from-pitcher-jesus-luzardo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/664273\/","title":{"rendered":"Phillies snatch another win off the Rockies behind a solid outing from pitcher Jes\u00fas Luzardo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">DENVER \u2014 Coors Field might be known as a hitter\u2019s paradise, but that was not the case on Saturday when <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/jesus-luzardo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jes\u00fas Luzardo<\/a> was on the mound. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Phillies\u2019 left-hander overcame the higher altitude and the large outfield susceptible to extra-base hits to shut down the Rockies\u2019 offense for 6 \u2154 innings. Luzardo limited Colorado to one run on five hits \u2014 all singles \u2014 and struck out 11 in the Phillies\u2019 2-1 win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The thinner air in Denver can make pitches, especially breaking balls, move less than normal. And sure enough, Luzardo\u2019s trademark sweeper averaged just seven inches of horizontal break on Saturday. In his first start of the season at Citizens Bank Park, the pitch had 12 inches of break. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p type-interstitial text-primary\">\u00bb READ MORE: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-link-type=\"interstitial\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/tim-mayza-pitching-zack-wheeler-phillies-colorado-20260404.html\" class=\"no-underline text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\">Phillies pitcher Tim Mayza wants his performances to speak volumes, both on and off the mound<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">But even so, Luzardo\u2019s command was pinpoint enough to get 10 of his 23 total whiffs and four of his 11 total strikeouts with the pitch. He did not walk a batter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cJust setting it up properly,\u201d Luzardo said of overcoming the reduced sweeper movement. \u201cJ.T. [Realmuto] did a great job back there, reading swings. And we had a good game plan going in, understanding which guys maybe to attack differently and maybe set up that sweeper a little bit better. I think getting into better spots in general is really the biggest part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It was a worthy follow-up performance to Friday\u2019s start from <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/aaron-nola\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron Nola<\/a>, who <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-rockies-score-highlights-bryce-harper-kyle-schwarber-aaron-nola-20260403.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/phillies-rockies-score-highlights-bryce-harper-kyle-schwarber-aaron-nola-20260403.html\">held the Rockies to a single run<\/a> over 6 \u2153 innings. But Luzardo had much less run support to work with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cIt\u2019s huge,\u201d <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/trea-turner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trea Turner<\/a> said. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to do, and I don\u2019t think anyone in here takes it for granted to go out there and kind of save your bullpen for two days and keep the runs down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In the first inning, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/kyle-schwarber\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kyle Schwarber<\/a>\u2019s bat split in half making contact with a cutter from Rockies opener Brennan Bernardino. A piece of his bat wound up in shallow right field, while the ball dropped just inside the left field line for a double. Trea Turner, who had drawn a leadoff walk and was stealing on the pitch, scored from first base for a 1-0 lead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cAs soon as I saw the umpire say fair, I knew there was a chance,\u201d Turner said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Rockies tied things up in the third inning. Luzardo allowed a leadoff single to Troy Johnston, who advanced to second after a wild pitch got by Realmuto. Johnston then advanced to third on a sacrifice fly, and scored on another single. Luzardo stranded the runner with a groundout and strikeout. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Turner drove in the winning run in the fifth inning, punching a line drive into left field for a double that scored <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/brandon-marsh\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brandon Marsh<\/a> from third. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The Phillies also made some strong defensive plays. In the first inning, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/alec-bohm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alec Bohm<\/a> made a backhand grab at third base and threw out the lead runner at second base. In the sixth inning, Turner slid to snag a ground ball hit up the middle, spun, and fired to first base in time. Adolis Garc\u00eda covered a lot of ground to catch a shallow fly ball in right field in the seventh, making a basket catch on the run.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">With two outs in the sixth and a 3-1 count on Hunter Goodman, Luzardo initiated an automated ball-strike challenge on a sweeper that would have been the fourth ball. The call was overturned, extending the at-bat. Goodman fouled off another sweeper and then struck out on a changeup to end the inning. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cSaved the walk and turned it into a strikeout,\u201d Luzardo said. \u201cSo it ended up working out, but I was definitely nervous when I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">While most teams prefer to leave ABS challenges to catchers as they have a better vantage point of the plate, the Phillies <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/abs-challenge-pitch-mlb-rules-robot-umpires-how-it-works-20260326.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/phillies\/abs-challenge-pitch-mlb-rules-robot-umpires-how-it-works-20260326.html\">do not have a blanket restriction<\/a> against pitchers challenging at this point. <\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cI was messing around with [Bryson] Stott, because he was telling me that I was gonna mess it up and I was gonna blow it for the pitchers the rest of the year,\u201d Luzardo said with a smile. \u201cSo I probably won\u2019t do it again, but I was pretty certain of that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The successful challenge likely helped save Luzardo\u2019s pitch count, and the Phillies pushed him into the next inning. Manager <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/rob-thomson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rob Thomson<\/a> lifted him with two outs in the seventh when he reached 99 pitches, leaving a runner on second base for <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/jose-alvarado\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jos\u00e9 Alvarado<\/a>. The lefty reliever walked the first batter he faced on five pitches and then took Kyle Karros to a full count. A leadoff single got past Trea Turner into center field, and pinch-running Jake McCarthy advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout.
