The Giants’ defense came apart at the worst times and opened the door for the Mets to score almost at will.

San Francisco’s offense was at the other end of the spectrum.

It all added up to another frustrating loss for the Giants that had the Oracle crowd – including Warriors center Kristaps Porziņģis – muttering as they headed for the exits.

Here are the takeaways from Saturday:

Offense on mute again

Outside of a nine-run game against the Padres and a seven-run outburst in the series opener with the Mets, the Giants’ offense largely has been silent early in the season.

One night after putting up five hits and three runs in a 10-3 loss to New York, San Francisco’s bats again went quiet.

The Giants managed just three hits and got only one runner past first base against starter Clay Holmes, who pitched seven scoreless innings to match a career best.

San Francisco, which has been shut out three times in nine games so far this season, has some talent in its lineup, but as of right now, there’s not a bat in the lineup that opposing pitchers fear or have to work around.

Dicey defense

The Giants played fairly decent defense through the first week of the season before things got a little out of control against the Mets.

Shortstop Willy Adames appeared to have a clean shot at getting an out in the second inning on Marcus Semien’s slow grounder but made a wild throw to first.

The Mets’ next batter, Carson Benge, hit a grounder that ended with two errors by the Giants. Normally reliable third baseman and five-time Gold Glove winner Matt Chapman fumbled trying to transfer the ball and rushed his throw to first for an error. First baseman Jerar Encarnacion also was charged with a fielding error on the same play that led to two runs scoring.

Roupp on the bump

Relying primarily on off-speed pitches, Roupp came out aggressively attacking the zone and struck out the side on 17 pitches in the first inning.

He fanned the first batter in the second inning, too, before things unraveled.

The defense behind Roupp didn’t provide much help, but it was New York’s bats that did the most damage.

When they weren’t lining hard hits into the outfield, the Mets showed a lot of patience at the plate and forced Roupp to throw 95 pitches. He was wild at times but was especially effective with his changeup, with which he generated six whiffs.

Download and follow the Giants Talk Podcast

SAN FRANCISCO – When the Giants were piling up three World Series titles in a five-year period, Oracle…

[2408
5,162,4932,2005,4,378,66,4343,4340,4344,4341,4342
0":"post-664392","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-francisco-giants","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-giants","10":"tag-giants-observations","11":"tag-landen-roupp","12":"tag-mlb","13":"tag-san-francisco","14":"tag-san-francisco-giants","15":"tag-sanfrancisco","16":"tag-sanfranciscogiants","17":"tag-sf","18":"tag-sf-giants","19":"tag-sfgiants
["GET
