The New York Mets<\/a> had a tumultuous start to the 2026 season, but have smoothed it out, with a record of 5-4, but are second to last in the NL East. While they have a major amount of star power, what they need is depth, and luckily, there\u2019s a guy out there who can be that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That guy being former three-time All-Star D.J. LeMahieu, as FanSided\u2019s Christopher Kline<\/a> predicts that the Mets will sign has a utility man backup to Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco. It would also be a major gut punch to their cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees<\/a>, as LeMahieu was a superstar and fan-favorite for them, until they cut him for Jazz Chisholm Jr.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Yankees DFA’d DJ LeMahieu last winter after seven years. He’s 37 years old, but he’s also a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner with serious pedigree. As a depth piece, nothing more and nothing less, LeMahieu is still worth a look. No team scoops up former Yankees quite so frequently as the crosstown Mets, who almost make it a point of pride. With Brett Baty as the primary DH, New York doesn’t have a ton of infield depth at the moment\u2026He’s probably an upgrade over Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco defensively, even still, which can’t hurt in a depth option,\u201d Kline wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the 45 games he played in 2025, LeMahieu slashed .266\/.338\/.336\/.674 with 3 doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI in 45 games. He\u2019s not a power hitter, but he gets on base, and moves runners over; perfect for the Mets\u2019 style of offense.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As for a contract, the Mets only need to offer him the veteran\u2019s minimum. The Yankees are still paying him<\/a>, which makes it even funnier for the Mets, as their rival would be paying one of their players to play for them.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, the Mets hop all over this, as there are other teams<\/a> that could see the value in getting a former superstar as a depth option.<\/p>\n
