The 30-year-old allowed three runs on three hits on Friday, making him ineligible to fill in for Eflin’s next projected start, which is Monday against the Chicago White Sox.

Thus, the transaction likely offers the team a one-off start while Kremer rests up before Eflin’s next projected start late next week. Povich will presumably take the mound on Monday or Tuesday, but Kremer is expected to be the long-term solution to the hole left by Eflin’s untimely injury.

Povich, who made last year’s Opening Day roster as the fifth starter, notched a 4.97 ERA in five starts last April, two of which saw the 25-year-old allow just one earned run.

Though he allowed five runs in five innings during his Opening Day start for Norfolk, Povich recorded eight punch outs and gave up no walks against the Memphis Redbirds.

The 2021 third-round selection was able to be recalled within 15 days of being optioned due to the corresponding injury to Hiraldo, who now joins veterans Keegan Akin and Andrew Kittredge the third reliever to be placed on Baltimore’s injured list.

For the 30-year-old right-hander, it has been a disastrous start to the new campaign.

Hiraldo has recorded a 21.60 ERA in three appearances, declaring right shoulder soreness after his third one, which saw him allow three runs in one inning against the Rangers. The veteran has also allowed four walks in less than two innings to start his season.

The O’s recently added 36-year-old Albert Suarez back to the active roster, providing some veteran stability to a hectic bullpen. He pitched three innings in relief of Trevor Rogers to record his first save in nine years and save the O’s from a sweep at the mercy of Texas.

Baltimore’s bullpen could also receive more reinforcements from Kittredge. The former All-Star is currently on a Triple-A rehab assignment and is expected to make a mid-April return, according to MLB.com’s Jake Rill.

Before Povich makes his expected start, however, Baltimore needs to avoid a sweep by the Pirates following two tragic one-run losses on Friday and Saturday.

Right-hander Chris Bassitt is making his second start as an Oriole with hopes to outperform his first. The 37-year-old veteran allowed four runs in just over four innings as Baltimore fell to the Rangers 5-2 on Monday.

The O’s have left a combined 17 runners on base over the last two games against the Pirates.
