It’s the second injury suffered by a Mets outfielder in the four-game series, with Juan Soto leaving Friday’s 10-3 win with a strained calf.

Fortunately for the Mets, manager Carlos Mendoza said the club isn’t overly concerned about Baty’s health. The utility man jammed his thumb on a slide into second base following a seventh-inning double in Saturday’s 9-0 win.

“Last night on that head-first slide at second base, he jammed that left thumb,” Mendoza said, via SNY. “He was able to finish the game, little sore afterwards. And then this morning, basically the same. We’re just trying to be smart about it, and that’s why he came out of the lineup.”

Baty Was Late Scratch From Mets Lineup

The Mets’ original lineup had Baty starting in right field, with rookie Carson Benge in left and Luis Robert Jr. in center. Instead, Jared Young played left while Benge manned right.

Baty was available off the bench, though the Mets did not wind up needing him. New York used a four-run eighth inning, keyed by a pinch-hit two-run single by Luis Torrens, to beat San Francisco 5-2.

The former third baseman has been slow to get going at the plate, slashing .242/.242/.364 with four RBI and one stolen base through eight games.

The Mets (6-4) hope to have Baty back in the lineup when they return home on Tuesday to host the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Mets Expect Baty to Return on Tuesday

Baty previously had surgery to repair a UCL tear in his right thumb, which caused him to miss the end of the 2022 season.

As for Baty’s latest injury, the club isn’t planning on conducting any tests.

“After talking to him, he’s probably a day or two (away),” Mendoza said. “Should be good to go on Tuesday. We’re not planning on doing any imaging or anything like that, he’s just day-to-day.”

That’s encouraging news for the Mets, who are already without Soto. First baseman/designated hitter Jorge Polanco (sore Achilles) has also missed time of late.

Douglas Bonjour is a breaking news contributor covering the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and WNBA for Heavy.
