DENVER \u2014 Mickey Moniak homered twice and the Colorado Rockies defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 on Sunday to salvage the finale of a three-game series.<\/p>\n
Tomoyuki Sugano (1-0) struck out five and gave up one run in six innings for the Rockies.<\/p>\n
T.J. Rumfield also homered for Colorado, hitting a two-run shot in a three-run first inning. Rumfield is hitting .345 with two home runs and five RBIs in his first nine games.<\/p>\n
Victor Vodnik struck out Rafael March\u00e1n with runners on first and second in the ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.<\/p>\n
It was Moniak\u2019s third career multi-home run game. The 27-year-old outfielder, who is in his second season in Colorado, was selected by the Phillies with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft and played for the franchise from 2020-22.<\/p>\n
Adolis Garc\u00eda homered in the second inning for Philadelphia. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Phillies, who left seven runners on base.<\/p>\n
In Washington, Shohei Ohtani homered and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly, and Los Angeles rallied from a five-run deficit to defeat the Nationals and complete a three-game sweep.<\/p>\n
Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez and Dalton Rushing also homered for Los Angeles, which has won four of its last five.<\/p>\n
Luis Garc\u00eda Jr. and James Wood went deep for Washington, which has lost its last five.<\/p>\n
The Dodgers scored four runs in the eighth off Cionel Perez (0-1), who loaded the bases before Santiago Espinal laced a two-run single to left-center. Perez was pulled without retiring a batter after he walked Will Smith, and Clayton Beeter surrendered Kyle Tucker\u2019s RBI fielder\u2019s choice to tie it at 6-6.<\/p>\n
Ohtani then lifted a fly to left that brought in Espinal to make it 7-6. Ohtani went 2 for 4 and finished the series 6 for 15 with two homers and six RBIs. He has 17 RBIs in 17 games against the Nationals since joining the Dodgers.<\/p>\n
Jack Dreyer (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for Los Angeles. Edwin Diaz worked the ninth for his third save.<\/p>\n
Ohtani opened the scoring with a line shot to center in the third inning against Nationals starter Foster Griffin. It was the Dodgers\u2019 only run against Griffin, who struck out six in five innings.<\/p>\n
CUBS 1, GUARDIANS 0 (1ST GAME)<\/p>\n
In Cleveland, Miguel Amaya hit an RBI single in the eighth inning \u2014 only the second hit for Chicago \u2014 and four Cubs pitchers combined for a one-hitter in a victory over the Guardians in the opener of a traditional doubleheader.<\/p>\n
Amaya\u2019s hard shot to right-center field off Connor Brogdon (2-1) scored pinch-runner Dylan Carlson from second base.<\/p>\n
The Guardians managed only one hit \u2014 a double that possibly could have been caught \u2014 against Cubs starter Edward Cabrera (5 2\/3 innings) and relievers Caleb Thielbar (1-0), Hoby Milner and Daniel Palencia, who worked a perfect ninth for his first save.<\/p>\n
Neither team was able to muster any offense in chilly, blustery conditions. The game-time temperature was 44 degrees Fahrenheit (6.6 degrees Celsius) with a steady wind blowing toward the plate at Progressive Field. A rainout Saturday prompted the Easter doubleheader, Chicago\u2019s first since 1973.<\/p>\n
GUARDIANS 6, CUBS 5 (2ND GAME)<\/p>\n
In Cleveland, CJ Kayfus homered and Gabriel Arias hit an RBI single in the eighth inning as the Guardians rallied to beat Chicago and split a doubleheader.<\/p>\n
Shut out 1-0 in the opener, the Guardians were six outs from being swept when Kayfus, who entered as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, homered off Jacob Webb (0-1) to tie it 4.<\/p>\n
Rookie Chase DeLauter followed with a single and Rhys Hoskins walked before Arias delivered his second run-scoring single of Game 2. Austin Hedges singles in a run to put Cleveland up 6-4.<\/p>\n
Scott Armstrong (1-0) allowed a tiebreaking homer but picked up the win. Cade Smith gave up an RBI single to Ian Happ in the ninth but stranded two for his third save.<\/p>\n
Dansby Swanson hit a two-run homer and Matt Shaw and Happ added solo shots for Chicago in Game 2.<\/p>\n
In Pittsburgh, Ryan O\u2019Hearn homered and matched a career high with four RBIs as the Pirates beat Baltimore to sweep a three-game series and extend its winning streak to five.<\/p>\n
O\u2019Hearn hit a two-run shot to right-center in the first inning. In the second, his two-run double highlighted a four-run outburst as the Pirates pushed their lead to 6-0.<\/p>\n
Oneil Cruz made it 8-1 with a two-run homer to center field in the sixth. He also singled home a run in the second.<\/p>\n
Cruz\u2019s homer came off left-hander Cade Povich. The center fielder is 7 for 10 with three homers against lefties after going 11 for 108 with one homer last season.<\/p>\n
That was plenty of support for Braxton Ashcraft (1-1), who allowed one run and four hits in six innings. He had a career-high eight strikeouts and no walks.<\/p>\n
In Boston, Jackson Merrill had three hits, including a solo homer in the eighth inning that gave the Padres the lead, and San Diego rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Red Sox and send Boston to their its loss in its last eight games.<\/p>\n
Manny Machado connected for a three-run homer and ex-Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts also got three hits for the Padres.<\/p>\n
The Red Sox scored four in the third inning but San Diego got three in the top of the fourth after Machado kicked away a pickoff attempt \u2014 perhaps not unintentionally \u2014 to put runners on second and third. Machado\u2019s first homer of the season in the fifth gave the Padres a 6-4 lead.<\/p>\n
Boston tied it in the seventh on Masataka Yoshida\u2019s two-run double. It was his third straight hit after starting the season 0 for 10. Wilyer Abreu also had three hits for Boston.<\/p>\n
RAYS 4, TWINS (10 innings)<\/p>\n
In Minneapolis, Richie Palacios hit a two-run homer in a three-run 10th inning, and Tampa Bay beat the Twins.<\/p>\n
Junior Caminero also went deep for Tampa Bay, which concluded a nine-game, 11-day, season-opening road trip with the 900th career win for manager Kevin Cash.<\/p>\n
Leading off the extra inning, Palacios hit his first home run of the season to right field on the second pitch he saw from Justin Topa (0-1). A bases-loaded walk by Caminero scored another run.<\/p>\n
Bryan Baker (1-0) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning for the win. Kevin Kelly earned his second save with a scoreless 10th.<\/p>\n
In Chicago, Davis Martin tossed six innings of four-hit ball to lead the White Sox past Toronto for their first three-game sweep of the Blue Jays in 10 years.<\/p>\n
Miguel Vargas had an RBI triple, and Lenyn Sosa and Austin Hays each drove in a run as the White Sox opened 3-0 at home for the first time since 2004. Luisangel Acu\u00f1a got two hits for Chicago (4-5), which last swept the Blue Jays in April 2016 at Toronto.<\/p>\n
Martin (2-0) struck out six and walked two in his second consecutive sharp start. Chris Murphy, Chicago\u2019s third reliever, worked around a walk in the ninth for his first save this season and the second of his career.<\/p>\n
Ernie Clement had two of Toronto\u2019s six hits as the AL champion Blue Jays (4-5) dropped their fourth straight game and were shut out for the first time this season.<\/p>\n
In Kansas City, Mo., William Contreras had a double and two RBIs and Kyle Harrison struck out six as Milwaukee defeated the Royals.<\/p>\n
Harrison (1-0) allowed three hits and two runs in 5 1\/3 innings, earning his first win since May 30, 2025. Christian Yelich was 2 for 5 with an RBI triple that opened the scoring in the first inning.<\/p>\n
Jake Bauers hit a pinch-hit RBI double and later scored in the ninth to extend the Brewers\u2019 lead, and Trevor Megill secured the win with his third save of the year.<\/p>\n
Gary S\u00e1nchez hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first, his third of the season, to take a 3-0 lead. He had five homers in 29 games last season.<\/p>\n
