The San Francisco Giants<\/a> had some work to do, but Matt Chapman got on base to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning against the New York Mets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That’s when the veteran third baseman did something absurdly dumb.<\/p>\n

Chapman took off. He was trying to steal second off of Devin Williams, the Mets’ closer.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t particularly close, though. Chapman got thrown out, and any hint of a rally went by the wayside.<\/p>\n

It’s hard to fathom why Chapman would run in this spot.<\/p>\n

Those are the Mets’ announcers in the video above, clearly flabbergasted by what Chapman was doing.<\/p>\n

That’s a fair way to feel. What was he accomplishing?<\/p>\n

The Giants need three runs, and he’d only be the first one. There’d be multiple hits required, or extra bases, no matter what to get them in.<\/p>\n

Getting from first to second in that spot means almost nothing to the final outcome of the game.<\/p>\n

Particularly if things trend poorly for the Giants moving forward, this decision by Chapman will loom large as an especially poor one.<\/p>\n
