{"id":666153,"date":"2026-04-06T09:30:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T09:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/666153\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T09:30:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T09:30:21","slug":"mariners-created-their-own-6-00-era-pitcher-issue-with-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/666153\/","title":{"rendered":"Mariners created their own 6.00 ERA pitcher issue with trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/seattle-mariners\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> made a key trade this offseason when they sent Harry Ford to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/washington-nationals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Nationals<\/a> to get the lefty reliever Jose A. Ferrer.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed like a potentially major upgrade to the bullpen, but there&#8217;s been one problem. Ferrer gets a lot of groundballs. The Mariners&#8217; defense isn&#8217;t up to snuff.<\/p>\n<p>To sum up things somewhat simply: Ferrer has a 6.00 ERA this season.<\/p>\n<p>A stat called expected ERA expects Ferrer to have a 1.73 ERA<\/p>\n<p>This is how Seattle sports reporter Anderson Hirst wrote this on X:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to Statcast: He has a 1.73 xERA, has yet to give up a barrel and has yet to walk anybody. He&#8217;s a guy who gives up soft contact and ground balls, which relies on defense to get results, and the Mariners infield defense is among the worst in the league.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>MORE:\u00a0<a target=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/los-angeles-angels\/news\/angels-jo-adell-robbed-3-home-runs-mariners-same-game-who-hit-how-did-it\/cedbd653305cdab130512218\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jo Adell robbed 3 home runs in the same game<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That definitely is a bad combination.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Feel bad for Ferrer.<\/p>\n<p>Hasn&#8217;t pitched poorly at all&#8230;but he&#8217;s a ground ball pitcher that relies on competent infield defense to make plays, and the Mariners don&#8217;t have that.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Anderson Hirst (@AndersHirst) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndersHirst\/status\/2040915651343376528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 5, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s obviously residing in the territory of being a small sample size right now, but that can continue to grow as a negative trend. It doesn&#8217;t always regress to some kind of mean.<\/p>\n<p>The Mariners&#8217; defense won&#8217;t just randomly get better.
