TIMES. Carpino is retiring Monday after 16 years in that role and 23 years total as a loyal exec under Angels owner Arte Moreno. The fans\u2019 reaction comes following Moreno\u2019s February comment<\/a> that surveys show \u201caffordability is the fans\u2019 top priority and \u2018believe it or not, winning is not in their top five.\u2019\u201d So Carpino, as a proxy for Moreno, was \u201cbooed loudly.\u201d Then a few \u201cmodest choruses of \u2018sell the team\u2019 broke out.\u201d The Angels sold 2.6 million tickets last year, a \u201ctestament to the strength of the market\u201d amid a second consecutive last-place finish. However, attendance has \u201cfallen 20% over the past 20 years,\u201d a span that includes one postseason series victory and the current streaks of 10 seasons with losing records and 11 seasons without a playoff appearance.
