{"id":667982,"date":"2026-04-07T08:25:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T08:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/667982\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T08:25:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T08:25:41","slug":"colin-quinn-powers-st-rita-past-oak-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/667982\/","title":{"rendered":"Colin Quinn powers St. Rita past Oak Forest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/29\/steve-millar-baseball-rankings-daily-southtown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Quinn<\/a> has a long list of family members who were athletes at St. Rita.<\/p>\n<p>Look no further than his father, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2001\/08\/23\/big-northern-redthe-2000-season-featured-a\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin<\/a>, a standout baseball player. Or his great uncle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1998\/11\/29\/it-was-once-the-biggest-game-in-town\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Billy Marek<\/a>, who will always be one of the best football players to ever suit up for the Mustangs.<\/p>\n<p>Late grandfather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2001\/10\/14\/st-rita-coaches-a-dynamic-duo-for-40-years\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Quinn<\/a> was a legendary football coach for St. Rita. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Cummings<\/a>, a cousin, is an international crosschecker for the New York Mets.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s just the tip of the iceberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been born to come to St. Rita,\u201d Colin said. \u201cIt\u2019s in my blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quinn got that blood boiling on a chilly Monday, powering a two-run homer over the left-center fence to spark the host Mustangs to a 9-4 nonconference win in a game that was moved to Chicago because of wet conditions at Oak Forest.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"St. Rita's catcher Colin Quinn (27) keeps an eye on a popup during the game against Oak Forest in Chicago on Monday, April 6, 2026 (James C. Svehla \/ Daily Southtown)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Jones<\/a> notched two hits and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayden Hawkins<\/a> scored two runs for St. Rita (6-2), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Rewers<\/a> (2-0) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gregory Zaber<\/a> combined to pitch the win.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Peck<\/a> hit a home run for Oak Forest (4-4). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gage Tokarz<\/a> added an RBI double.<\/p>\n<p>Quinn, meanwhile, is continuing the family legacy at St. Rita by mashing the ball in the early going. Svehla \/ Daily Southtown)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really is making his mark,\u201d St. Rita coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/06\/20\/a-big-part-of-us-st-ritas-john-nee-is-the-2019-daily-southtown-baseball-coach-of-the-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Nee<\/a> said of Quinn. \u201cHe\u2019s been our best hitter by far. He\u2019s got both of our home runs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nee confirmed that success has come because of hard work over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a baseball junkie,\u201d Nee said of Quinn. \u201cHe\u2019s a throwback. He\u2019s one of those guys who brings his glove to every family party. We don\u2019t have those guys anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose guys were baseball junkies or \u2018gym rats\u2019 as we call them. He\u2019s the guy in the offseason who will hit every day. Svehla \/ Daily Southtown)<\/p>\n<p>Rewers, a St. Ambrose recruit, enjoys working with his talented batterymate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a great bat,\u201d Rewers said of Quinn. \u201cHe\u2019s good defensively. If you make a bad pitch, he will block it. And if you have the bases loaded, he\u2019s the guy you want batting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll drive in those runs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Mustangs took a long trip for spring break and played four games in the All Faiths Classic in Las Vegas. They finished 2-2.<\/p>\n<p>St. Rita opened with two losses that were time-shortened \u2014 an 11-10 setback to Paul VI of Virginia and a 12-11 loss to Arrowhead Christian of California.<\/p>\n<p>But the Mustangs recovered and beat two Florida teams \u2014 13-1 over Miami Christian and 3-2 over Neumann \u2014 that allowed them to come home happy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"St. Rita's catcher Colin Quinn (27) during the game against Oak Forest in Chicago on Monday, April 6, 2026 (James C. (James C. Svehla \/ Daily Southtown)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe played some good teams with some good talent,\u201d Quinn said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to get us ready for Catholic League Blue play. It was a great experience, especially getting to bond with the guys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think our team is really gritty and we have guys who want to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With legendary uncles, cousins and a grandfather who were winners at St. Rita, Colin and his brother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/03\/15\/steve-millar-daily-southtown-baseball-preview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Braden<\/a>, a junior, are helping to bring a new generation of the Quinn family to the forefront.<\/p>\n<p>The other generations have helped pass down a love for the game. Even though he tried other sports, Colin can\u2019t get enough of baseball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can learn a lot about life from it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a game of failure.
