ARLINGTON, Texas \u2014 When Cal Raleigh\u2019s 12-pitch battle with Jacob deGrom in the top of the first inning ended with a baseball-sized comet traveling into the right-field seats, it seemed like the sort of moment that might unlock an inconsistent Mariners offense that has been truant a little more than expected this season.<\/p>\n
It was Raleigh\u2019s first homer of the season. It came on a quality swing against a 99-mph fastball producing a blast that had a 108-mph exit velocity, traveling 418 feet. It was a no-doubt blast against the Rangers\u2019 ace.<\/p>\n
So, did it spark the slumping middle of the order or ignite the inconsistent offense for a big night?<\/p>\n
Yeah, not so much.<\/p>\n
That was the only run the Mariners would produce and it was one of the two hits they recorded in what would be a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Rangers.<\/p>\n
The Mariners have now lost three games in a row and five of their last six.<\/p>\n
Following Raleigh\u2019s homer, the Mariners had just five hitters reach base over the next eight innings. None of them advanced to second base.<\/p>\n
They never really threatened to score. And with the roof open at Globe Life Field on a cool evening, the park, which plays even more difficult that T-Mobile Park, felt cavernous.<\/p>\n
Logan Gilbert gave the Mariners a quality start, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
