{"id":668393,"date":"2026-04-07T13:28:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/668393\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T13:28:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:28:18","slug":"mets-to-retire-carlos-beltrans-number-years-after-astros-fallout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/668393\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets to retire Carlos Beltran&#8217;s number years after Astros fallout"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Six years after Carlos Beltran was supposed to manage the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/sports\/mlb\/new-york-mets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Mets<\/a>, the organization is making him the face of the franchise once again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Mets hired Beltran, a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/baseball-hall-fame-adds-2-outfielders-cooperstown-including-one-tied-astros-scandal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hall of Fame electee<\/a>, ahead of the 2020 MLB season to make him their next manager after firing Mickey Callaway. (Seth Wenig\/AP)<\/p>\n<p>Twelve Mets have worn the number since Beltran&#8217;s last game with the Mets in 2011 \u2014 outfielder Tyrone Taylor currently wears it. But Beltran&#8217;s Hall of Fame plaque this summer will feature a Mets cap, making him the third player to represent the Mets in Cooperstown, along with Tom Seaver and Mike Piazza.<\/p>\n<p>When MLB announced its findings into the investigation into the Astros in 2020, Beltran was the only player named in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/sports\/mlb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred&#8217;s report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has widely been speculated that Beltran, along with Boston Red Sox manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/person\/alex-cora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Alex Cora<\/a>, the Astros bench coach at the time, spearheaded the operation.<\/p>\n<p>While Beltran&#8217;s most memorable moment in a Mets uniform is an unfortunate one \u2014 looking at Adam Wainwright&#8217;s 3-2 breaking ball with the bases loaded to end Game 7 of the National League Championship Series \u2014 he is still easily one of the greatest players in franchise history. (Stephen Dunn\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/sports\/world-series-winning-manager-gets-emotional-learning-live-tv-team-retire-number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WORLD SERIES-WINNING MANAGER GETS EMOTIONAL AFTER LEARNING ON LIVE TV HIS TEAM WILL RETIRE HIS NUMBER<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The nine-time All-Star was a consistent force throughout his entire career, even making the Midsummer Classic in his second-to-last season as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/sports\/mlb\/new-york-yankees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">New York Yankee<\/a>, when he hit .295 with an .850 OPS, 35 home runs and 101 RBIs.<\/p>\n<p>Beltran, a switch-hitter, won three Gold Glove Awards while accumulating 2,725 hits, 435 of which were home runs. He also stole 300 bases in his career, making him one of just eight players in MLB history in the 300-300 club. Thirty-two of those players, including Beltran, are in the Hall of Fame. The other seven who aren\u2019t are either tied to performance-enhancing drugs (Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Rafael Palmeiro, Gary Sheffield, Manny Ramirez) or are not yet eligible for the Hall of Fame (Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera).
