{"id":669299,"date":"2026-04-08T00:24:25","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/669299\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T00:24:25","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T00:24:25","slug":"guardians-strong-start-powered-by-long-forgotten-padres-trade-fleece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/669299\/","title":{"rendered":"Guardians&#8217; strong start powered by long-forgotten Padres trade fleece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5i\">On Aug. 31, 2020, the Cleveland Guardians acquired six players from the San Diego Padres in exchange for Mike Celvinger, Greg Allen and Matt Waldron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5l\">While a lot has happened in the nearly six years since that trade, the Guardians are <a href=\"https:\/\/awaybackgone.com\/re-grading-guardians-2020-trade-with-padres-that-has-turned-into-huge-win\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">still reaping the benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5o\">And not just in a fun \u2018look at this trade tree\u2019 kind of way. But in a real life way where they&#8217;re getting contirubtions from Gabriel Arias, Austin Hedges and Joey Cantillo \u2014 all of whom were part of Cleveland&#8217;s return in that trade. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5r\">And while all three of them have had plenty of peaks and valleys during their time with the Guardians, they\u2019ve both been playing well so far this season and are two big reasons why Cleveland is near the top of the American League Central despite opening the season with one of the toughest schedules in baseball.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Guardians are still enjoying benefits of 2020 trade with Padres\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5x\">The biggest piece from the trade that\u2019s helped them this season has been Arias.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"60\">\u00a0Although his strong start to the season hit a snag earlier today when the Guardians placed him on the 15-day injured list, he still had a clear impact on winning through the first week-and-a-half of the Guardians\u2019 season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"63\">After struggling on the season-opening road trip, he had a great series with the Cubs that included a go-ahead home run in the home opener on a slider away (the kind of pitch that\u2019s given him fits his entire career) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/guardians\/news\/guardians-win-game-2-of-doubleheader-vs-cubs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">before adding a go-ahead single <\/a>in Game 2 of Sunday\u2019s doubleheader against the Cubs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Gabby comes through in the clutch again!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GuardsBall?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">#GuardsBall<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tdohr4JlBM\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/tdohr4JlBM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cleveland Guardians (@CleGuardians) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CleGuardians\/status\/2040930667203113263?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 5, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"69\">He sustained the injury on Monday while running the bases after lining a double into the left-field corner and <a href=\"https:\/\/awaybackgone.com\/gabriel-arias-injury-could-open-door-for-franchise-altering-guardians-decision\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has been replaced on the roster by Juan Brito.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\">Another piece from the trade who has turned things around this season is Hedges, though his journey is a bit different than Arias.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6f\">While Arias is still in his initial stint with the team (he was a 20-year-old prospect who hadn\u2019t played above High-A at the time of the trade), Hedges is on his second tour of duty with Cleveland.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">He spent parts of three seasons with the Guardians after being acquired in that 2020 trade before spending a season away in 2023 that ended with him winning a World Series title with the Rangers. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">He returned to Progressive Field for the 2024 season and <a href=\"https:\/\/awaybackgone.com\/guardians-make-first-official-move-of-offseason-as-2026-preparations-begin-01k7jx4d34q5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has signed a one-year contract with the Guardians <\/a>in every season since. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">Although he\u2019s a great defender and clubhouse presence, he\u2019s never been known for his offense. In fact, he entered this season with a career batting average of .185 in 820 games.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">But he\u2019s been much better this season, as he entered play on Tuesday with a batting average of .500 (4-for-8) through two games played.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">An incredibly small sample size, yes, but it\u2019s still an encouraging sign from someone not known for their offense. His biggest swing came on Sunday when he padded the Guardians\u2019 lead in the eighth inning with an RBI single to right field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">In previous years, that\u2019s the kind of at-bat that usually ends with Hedges walking back to the dugout with his bat in his hand. But instead he recorded a much-needed hit. It may not be sustainable across the entire season, but it\u2019s still fun to enjoy the ride.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"74\">The last piece of the trade who is still helping the Guardians is Joey Cantillo, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/awaybackgone.com\/joey-cantillo-could-be-x-factor-in-guardians-rotation-in-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">picked up where he left off last season.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"77\">The 26-year-old was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/guardians\/2025\/09\/guardians-cade-smith-joey-cantillo-earn-american-league-monthly-awards-for-september.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American League Rookie of the Month last September<\/a> after he posted a 1.55 ERA across five starts, and he has a 3.00 ERA across two starts (nine innings) this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7a\">Cantillo\u2019s strong start to the season isn\u2019t as much of a surprise given how last season went, but it\u2019s still a step in the positive direction (and a reminder how lopsided the Guardians\u2019 trade with the Padres has become). <\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On Aug. 31, 2020, the Cleveland Guardians acquired six players from the San Diego Padres in exchange for&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":669300,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2380],"tags":[5,135,51,2565,538,4],"class_list":{"0":"post-669299","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cleveland-guardians","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-cleveland","10":"tag-cleveland-guardians","11":"tag-clevelandguardians","12":"tag-guardians","13":"tag-mlb"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/channels.im\/@mlb\/116366243713530322","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/669299","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=669299"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/669299\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/669300"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=669299"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=669299"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=669299"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
