What an honor it is that I was the first one to get to wear it. It was a little big for me, but I’ll fit into it, eventually.”

Here’s the backstory.

Rockies assistant pitching coach Gabe Ribas got the coat from a friend, who found it during Mardi Gras. Ribas brought it to the Rockies, and they used it for their home run celebration for the first time on Monday.

“Gabe Ribas’ (buddy) gave it to him, and we thought it was the perfect coat for a home run celebration,” manager Warren Schaeffer said. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

Johnston has been a nice addition to the Rockies’ roster. He was hitting .333 with two home runs and five RBIs heading into Tuesday night’s game vs. the Astros.

Johnston, picked up on waivers from the Marlins in November, had no idea he’d be part of a new Rockies tradition.

“I had not seen the coat, and then somebody threw it on me,” he said before Tuesday’s game. “I thought it was great, but I was sweating so much, I couldn’t get my arms into the sleeves.”

Home run celebrations have become a thing in the majors. This season, for example, the Cleveland Guardians introduced a medieval-themed home run celebration featuring a knight’s helmet and broadsword.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the helmet and sword began during a team-bonding dinner at Medieval Times in Scottsdale during spring training. The team dressed up in medieval costumes. At the event, Tanner Bibee bought the helmet, Kyle Manzardo bought the sword, and veteran catcher Austin Hedges organized the celebration.

In 2023, the Seattle Mariners introduced a 6-feet, 6-inch tall metal trident that a home run hitter shows off after going deep. The Mariners’ trident is a replica accessory from the 2018 superhero film “Aquaman.”

In 2024, the Rockies’ home run celebration featured a ski helmet and goggles, honoring Colorado’s skiing culture.

“There’s a bunch of cool traditions now,” Johnston said. “The Mariners have their trident, but we have a large, fur, purple coat. I think that’s pretty awesome.”

Want more Rockies news?
