It only took one inning for J.T. Realmuto’s iron man status to be tested against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The Philadelphia Phillies catcher was in obvious pain after he took a foul ball off his right foot as he was crouched behind the plate. He leapt to his feet and walked it off and played through the rest of the first inning. Realmuto was scheduled to bat in the top of the second inning, but was pinch-hit and replaced defensively by Rafael March\u00e1n. <\/p>\n
It was later announced that Realmuto left the game with a bruised right foot<\/a>, and after the game, the team revealed that follow-up X-Rays were negative. The outcome is a best-case scenario for both Realmuto and the Phillies, but still gives the Phillies less to work with when it comes to their offensive depth if Realmuto has to sit for any amount of time.<\/p>\n It’s also always possible that something was missed on the initial X-Ray, and a hairline fracture didn’t present itself. Realmuto scare in San Francisco<\/p>\n A bruised foot won’t stop Realmuto from getting back onto the field, but they have to be cautious to avoid any additional wear and tear on their 35-year-old backstop. Realmuto has caught in 792 career games as a member of the Phillies and also leads most years in innings played at his position. He’s been the Phillies’ rock, but now has to rely on March\u00e1n and company to help the lineup and also fill his defensive shoes for a bit.<\/p>\n Realmuto has been okay to start the 2026 season. In nine games, he’s hitting .240 with a home run, four runs, and one RBI. In 134 games last season, Realmuto finished with a .699 OPS, 12 home runs, and 52 RBI. Realmuto isn’t the same offensive player he once was, but still provides some formidable pop from a catcher. He’s also their long-term solution, freshly inked for three more years<\/a> this offseason.<\/p>\n March\u00e1n is the Phillies next catcher on the depth chart<\/a> and would see the majority of playing time if Realmuto needs any additional time. In 42 games for March\u00e1n in 2025, he hit .210 with two home runs and 13 RBI. Unfortunately for the Phillies, they don’t really have a fantastic option to fill in and do damage in Realmuto’s absence. The Phillies recently have been forced to make it work<\/a> with Realmuto being sidelined, and it looks like they’ll be tested again this year.<\/p>\n
