After falling just short of a World Series title, the club spent over $330 million on a handful of new signings. Dylan Cease, Kazuma Okamoto, Tyler Rogers, and Cody Ponce were all brought in to help Toronto get over the hump. Veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer was re-signed as well.

Despite this heavy spending, the Blue Jays also offered star outfielder Kyle Tucker a 10-year, $350 million contract. The former Astro and Cub was widely regarded as the top free agent in baseball this past winter. According to a previous prediction by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, the deal was fairly close to what Tucker was expected to receive. Along with the massive proposal, Toronto also attempted to woo Tucker in other ways.

The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon reports that the outfielder played rounds of golf with multiple Toronto players in Florida. Tucker told Bannon that versatile Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement flew to the Sunshine State to play golf and answer any questions about Toronto. “[Clement] was a great guy to go to,” stated Tucker. “A great player, great person. Was fun hanging out.”

Fellow former Astros George Springer and Myles Straw reached out to the star as well. Despite the efforts, Tucker eventually opted to sign a four-year, $240 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. “I was just trying to make the most of the rest of my career,” Tucker explained. “You don’t play this game forever, so I was trying to make the most out of it wherever I felt the best landing spot was for me and my family. That was California.”

Toronto Blue Jays Previously Helped Kyle Tucker Recover from Injury

GettyKyle Tucker opted against signing in Toronto to join the Dodgers for less money.

Tucker rejected Toronto’s long-term deal even though the Blue Jays organization helped him rehab a significant injury in 2024. The outfielder suffered a freak shin fracture after fouling a ball off his leg in June of that year. The incident happened during a home game against the St. Louis Cardinals while he was with the Astros. Tucker missed just over three months of action due to the injury.

The star Dodger has now revealed that the Blue Jays allowed him to have access to rehab facilities in Toronto during his recovery. The good gesture was somewhat rare considering Tucker played on an opposing team. Tucker claims that he was “always grateful” for the team’s act of kindness during the July 2024 series.

Blue Jays Fans Boo Star Outfielder for Rejecting Team

Blue Jays fans, however, have not exactly shown the same hospitality to Tucker in recent days. The Dodgers, along with the star outfielder, arrived in Toronto on April 6 for a three-game series. Home fans emphatically booed Tucker during his first plate appearance on the day. The third-highest-paid player in baseball went one for three with three runs during his return to Toronto.

The Blue Jays have started the 2026 season slowly and are already 4.5 games out of first place in the American League East. At the moment, Toronto has the fifth-worst offense (3.36 runs per game) in baseball. Injuries have already decimated the team’s pitching staff as well. Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, Ponce, and Scherzer are all currently sidelined with various issues.

Christopher Moore Christopher Moore has been a Heavy.com contributor since 2025.
