As he ruminated the miss, he missed something bigger.

Bradish’s lack of attention in the fifth inning Wednesday led to a two-error sequence. First, Bradish dropped a throw back to the mound from catcher Adley Rutschman. And, as Bradish slowly walked to pick it up, White Sox infielder Chase Meidroth broke from third base to the plate.

Meidroth slid in safely. Bradish, who realized late that Meidroth was running, threw the ball to the backstop for his second error.

The Orioles went on to win anyway, but manager Craig Albernaz and Bradish addressed the issue in the moment and again publicly after the contest. Bradish owned the mistake and vowed never to make it again.

“Frustration came out,” Bradish said. “Unacceptable. That’s just childish behavior, and that will not happen again.”

In a conversation with Albernaz following the inning, Bradish made it clear he understood the optics. Bradish’s gaffe gave Chicago a 3-2 lead, but Baltimore’s hitters soon took the lead back.

“I went up to him right after in the tunnel, and we talked about it,” Bradish said. “I voiced my frustration with myself, and nobody’s going to be harder on that than myself and he knows that. The team knows that. Like I said, that will not happen again.”

Bradish’s outing was done after those five innings. He showed improvement with his fastball command compared to his first two starts. Bradish’s command will remain somewhat of a work in progress, which isn’t unusual for pitchers coming off Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery. Bradish returned late last year, but he hasn’t built a large innings load.

Albernaz said the lackadaisical error from Bradish is already water under the bridge.

“That play shouldn’t have happened with KB,” Albernaz said. “KB is frustrated. We talked. You know he’s frustrated. He owned up to it, and we had a good conversation.”

Bradish allowed five straight hits in the second inning but held the White Sox to two runs. He settled into the third and fourth innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He walked two straight batters before forcing a flyout. Then, with two outs, a walk to Colson Montgomery loaded the bases. That’s when Bradish’s missed catch allowed Meidroth to score.

But Bradish responded with an inning-ending strikeout, and the rest of the team picked him up. The bullpen produced four clean innings, and Taylor Ward drove three doubles as part of a four-hit game.

CHICAGO — Kyle Bradish was still thinking about the walk he just issued to load the bases.
