It was a tactical move that needed to be made, as Sánchez proved himself one of the top arms in the rotation during the 2025 season.

“The Phillies announced on Sunday morning that they have signed Sánchez to a new six-year contract that guarantees him $107 million through 2032, with a 2033 club option worth $32.5 million that can increase up to $44.5 million, according to a source,” MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki wrote.

While the extension was a smart move for the Phillies, it has now prompted Bryce Harper to request a deal of his own, one he believes he deserves. However, it doesn’t make much sense for Philadelphia to give in.

“This is not the first we’ve heard of Harper wanting a new deal. It’s not the first we’ve heard of the Phillies discussing the possibility with his representatives, either. And now, after the Phillies extended Cristopher Sánchez for almost entirely merit-based reasons, Harper has a precedent he can cite. Here’s the rub, though: Harper is on a much larger contract than Sánchez was. Sánchez basically restructured a four-year, $22.5 million deal into a six-year, $107 million deal. If the Phillies don’t touch a thing, Harper will be contractually obligated to Philadelphia through 2031 — another five years and roughly $118 million after this season,” FanSided’s Christopher Kline wrote.

This comes after an offseason in which Harper and Phillies President of Baseball Operations reportedly clashed over Harper’s performance.

“I don’t get motivated by that kind of stuff. For me it was kind of wild the whole situation of that happening,” Harper told reporters. “I think the big thing for me was when we first met with this organization it was, ‘Hey, we’re always going to keep things in-house, and we expect you to do the same thing,’ so when that didn’t happen, it kind of took me for a run a little bit, so I don’t know. It’s part of it, I guess. It was kind of a wild situation.”

The Phillies undoubtedly have a strong roster, but if their franchise player is unhappy, anything can happen. Philadelphia is starting to tread on thin ice with Harper.

While giving Sánchez the contract was the right move, it seems to have created some tension. Nothing major has happened yet, but if the Phillies don’t address Harper’s concerns, things could turn for the worse in Philadelphia.

More MLB news:

The Philadelphia Phillies made the decision to extend southpaw Christopher Sánchez right before the start of the regular…

[2397
5,4,144,25,4216,40
0":"post-671533","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-philadelphia-phillies","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-mlb","10":"tag-philadelphia","11":"tag-philadelphia-phillies","12":"tag-philadelphiaphillies","13":"tag-phillies
["GET
