ATLANTA \u2014 Major League Baseball suspended Atlanta Braves pitcher Reynaldo L\u00f3pez and Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler for Tuesday night\u2019s bench-clearing brawl.<\/a><\/p>\n

MLB issued a 7-game suspension and undisclosed fines for both players. L\u00f3pez appealed through the MLB Players Association and got his reduced to 5-games. <\/p>\n

The Braves and Angels benches cleared on Tuesday night after Soler and L\u00f3pez got into an heated exchange in the fifth inning. <\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez threw a high-and-inside fastball at Soler, who had a home run and was hit by a pitch earlier in the game. Soler charged the mound before he and L\u00f3pez, who still had a baseball in his hand, started throwing punches. <\/p>\n

\u201cI asked him if everything was OK and the answer he gave me, I didn\u2019t like it,\u201d Soler said through an interpreter, according to MLB.com. \u201cThat\u2019s why I went out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn my part, there was never any intent to hit him at any point. So, again, it\u2019s just a shame,” L\u00f3pez said through an interpreter, according to MLB.com.<\/p>\n

Players and coaches from both benches ran onto the field and Braves manager Walt Weiss tackled Soler, who he coached during his time in Atlanta, to the ground. Weiss said his instincts just kicked in. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love Soler. We were teammates here. But that\u2019s a big man. I just felt like I gotta get him off his feet because he\u2019s going to hurt somebody,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

With the Braves having an off day on Thursday, L\u00f3pez won\u2019t have to miss his next scheduled start. Soler played in Wednesday\u2019s game while he appealed his suspension. <\/p>\n
