The Boston Red Sox<\/a> have been one of the most disappointing teams to start the 2026 MLB season.<\/p>\n

Right now, they are 4-8 in their first 12 games, which has them at the bottom of the American League East.<\/p>\n

On Friday night, the Red Sox will open up a series with the St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> (in Missouri).<\/p>\n

There are a lot of things that have recently gone wrong for the Red Sox, but it\u2019s worth looking back at a trade they made in 2023.<\/p>\n

They sent Chris Sale<\/a> to the Atlanta Braves<\/a> for little in return.<\/p>\n

The Boston Red Sox wrote (via X) on December 30, 2023:<\/a> \u201cThe #RedSox today acquired INF Vaughn Grissom<\/a> from the Atlanta Braves, in exchange for LHP Chris Sale and cash considerations.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his first year playing for Atlanta (2024), Sale made the All-Star Game (and won the Cy Young Award).<\/p>\n

He went 18-3 with a 2.38 ERA in 29 games.<\/p>\n

Sale then followed up that season with another All-Star appearance in 2025.<\/p>\n

Chad Bishop of AJC wrote (on March 27):<\/a> \u201cChris Sale with career strikeout 2,584 to pass Warren Spahn for 30th on MLB\u2019s all-time career strikeout list.<\/p>\n

Tom Glavine is 29th with 2,607.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are plenty of reasons that Sale could have used a change of scenery in 2023, but it\u2019s safe to say the Braves won the trade in a big way.<\/p>\n

Grissom only appeared in 31 games for the Red Sox (in 2024).<\/p>\n

He batted .190 with six RBI\u2019s, ten runs and two stolen bases.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old did not play in the Major Leagues last season.<\/p>\n

They last won a World Series Championship in 2018 (with Sale).<\/p>\n
