Tyler Glasnow is set to take the mound when the Los Angeles Dodgers host the Texas Rangers Friday evening<\/a>, but there was a chance he wouldn\u2019t be playing for LA at all if it wasn\u2019t for a country music superstar.<\/p>\n

Glasnow, a dark-horse Cy Young candidate<\/a> who hails from Santa Clarita, was traded to his hometown team in December 2023 from the Tampa Bay Rays.<\/p>\n

When Dodgers superfan Brad Paisley<\/a> appeared on the Dodgers Territory podcast<\/a>, he revealed his key role in bringing Glasnow home.<\/p>\n

Paisley said he was hosting a few dozen Dodgers front office members at his home when he was put on the phone with Erik Neander, president of baseball operations for the Rays, and the singer invited Neander to join them.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe put Erik Neander on the phone and I said, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re with the wrong team, you can be here,’\u201d Paisley recounted. \u201cAnd then he said, \u2018Man, I wish I could,\u2019 and then he got on there with Andrew [Friedman, the Dodgers\u2019 president of baseball operations], and he said, \u2018That sounds like Brad Paisley. That\u2019s a good impression.\u2019 And Andrew said, \u2018No, we\u2019re really at his house, and he\u2019s got a bar, and we\u2019re all hanging out.’\u201d<\/p>\n

After Friedman confirmed with Paisley that his invite to Neander was real, Paisley found himself hosting trade discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe next thing you know, eight Tampa Bay Rays front office people walk in,\u201d Paisley said. \u201cWe\u2019ve already got about 30 Dodgers. There\u2019s eight Rays.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Paisley was a generous host, he didn\u2019t go all out. Instead, he dangled a carrot to encourage the trade discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was about 11 o\u2019clock when Erik came in,\u201d Paisley said. \u201cAnd here\u2019s the GM of the Rays, and he sits down at the bar and he\u2019s like, \u2018What do you got?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Well, this whole top shelf is the most expensive stuff. And you don\u2019t get that until Tyler Glasnow is a Dodger.\u2019 He\u2019s like, \u2018Fine, I\u2019ll just deal with you. What do you think of so-and-so?\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018That\u2019d be a great Ray.’\u201d<\/p>\n

After some private discussions between the teams, Friedman indicated to Paisley that \u201cit\u2019s looking good.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then a couple of days later, he wrote me, \u2018You get the assist,\u2019 which is really fun,\u201d Paisley said. \u201cIt is what you hope. When I think of baseball movies or any of these things, I think of guys at a bar, piano music in the background, and they write some stuff down on a napkin and then they\u2019re like, \u2018What do you think?\u2019 \u2018Yeah, we\u2019ll do that.\u2019 That\u2019s kind of how it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dodgers and Rays Weren\u2019t All Business at Paisley\u2019s House<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unclear how long the talks lasted, the party certainly went on into the wee hours of the morning.<\/p>\n

Paisley refused to name names, or even identify this person\u2019s team, but one executive had quite a night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey stayed until 4 in the morning and called an Uber,\u201d he said. \u201cOne of the front office people with one of the teams face planted in the front yard on the way to the Uber. Not kidding. Had grass stains on their face when they got back to the hotel at 5 in the morning. And yeah, this is all true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hope remains that one day, we\u2019ll find out who this is.<\/p>\n
