The\u00a0Colorado\u00a0Rockies dropped a hard-fought extra-innings game last night\u00a0to the San Diego Padres, and the\u00a07-3<\/a>\u00a0final doesn\u2019t quite reflect how close things were, Colorado stayed competitive behind a solid pitching effort and a strong night at the plate from\u00a0Brenton Doyle<\/a>, who connected on his first\u00a0homer<\/a>\u00a0of the season. The sting of the loss fades a bit on what is a significant day for the organization off the field, as\u00a0news<\/a>\u00a0of new minority ownership marks a notable moment in franchise history.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been that kind of start for the Rockies\u00a0\u2014\u00a0fun,\u00a0unpredictable,\u00a0and\u00a0sneaky competitive\u00a0(even when the results\u00a0don\u2019t always follow) \u2014\u00a0and at 6-7,\u00a0they\u2019ll look to reset quickly and get back to .500 as the young season continues in San Diego\u00a0against the 7-6 Padres.<\/p>\n

Taking the mound for the Rox tonight is\u00a0Tomoyuki Sugano.<\/a>\u00a0Sugano has been a steady presence\u00a0early<\/a>, posting a 1.69 ERA with a 0.84 WHIP through his first\u00a010.2 innings.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0leaning on his four-seamer (30%) while\u00a0using\u00a0his cutter,\u00a0splitter\u00a0and sweeper in\u00a0a fairly even\u00a0mix (18%-19%).\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0not missing a ton of bats, but with a 51% ground-ball rate and just three walks in 41 batters faced,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0done an excellent job limiting traffic and keeping things under control.<\/p>\n

Opposing Sugano is\u00a0veteran righty\u00a0Walker Buehler.<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0Buehler is still working his way back into form and has looked a bit uneven to start the season\u00a0\u2013 seven earned runs and five walks across 6.2 innings of work.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0been able to generate ground balls, but command lapses have led to traffic on the bases and some short outings.\u00a0Buehler\u00a0uses\u00a0his\u00a0cut\u00a0fastball and\u00a0curveball\u00a0about half the time but\u00a0has\u00a0mixed in as many as seven different pitches\u00a0this season.\u00a0That variety\u00a0adds some unpredictability but also points to a pitcher still searching for a consistent feel.<\/p>\n

Colorado\u2019s\u00a0ultra-aggressive<\/a>\u00a0offense will be tested against a pitcher who has struggled early\u00a0\u2014\u00a0can they show a bit more patience and take advantage of mistakes?<\/p>\n
