Higgins pitched the ninth inning and was the best Reds pitcher of the night.

He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and struck out Josh Lowe on a 54 miles an hour delivery. And earlier in the game, Lowe hit a home run off Burns.

It was the Reds’ third straight loss and they scored three runs in their last 18 innings. And they are 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position the last two games.

Burns was a slim shadow of himself after being downright dominant in the first two starts, one run in 11 innings.

He had no command of his pitches and was constantly behind nearly every hitter. His line was 5 1/3 innings, five runs, seven hits and two home runs.

On Thursday in Miami, Rhett Lowder entered the game with a 1.64 earned run average, but gave up four earned runs during the 8-1 loss and his ERA ballooned to 3.31.

Chase’s ERA climbed from 0.82 to an identical 3.31.

During the three straight losses the Reds once practically perfect pitching has given up 25 runs and 34 hits.

The Reds were only down 5-1 when the eighth inning began. Sam Moll retired the first batter, then walked two straight.

Cincinnati Reds’ Elly de la Cruz, front right, celebrates with third base coach Willie Harris (99) after hitting a solo home run during the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels in Cincinnati, Friday, April 10, 2026.

                                    Ben Jackson – FR172357 AP

Manager Tito Francona brought in Kyle Nicolas, called up from Louisville just before the game and his Reds’ debut was a debacle.

He walked Logan O’Hoppe, hitting .219. He walked number nine hitter Adam Frazier. He gave up a single to Zach Neto to fill the bases.

He walked Mike Trout to make it 6-1.

Then he faced Jorge Soler, who was playing on suspension. He was suspended seven games for a fight he had Thursday in Atlanta.

But because he appealed the suspension, he is permitted to play until the appeal hearing. So he stood in the batter’s box with a 3-and-1 count and unloaded a 418-foot grand slam home run into the left field seats and it was 10-1.

For seven innings the Reds had only two hits off Angels’ starter Jack Kochanowicz, a pair of singles by Eugenio Suarez.

The Reds scored their two runs on a ground out with the bases loaded by TJ Friedl in the fifth after Kochanowicz walked the bases loaded and an eighth-inning home run by Elly De La Cruz in the eighth when it was 10-1.

Burns struck out the game’s first batter and pitched a 1-2-3 inning and struck out the first batter in the second.

Then, mayhem.

On four pitches he walked Yoan Moncado, hitting .083. He got the second out, but Josh Lowe, hitting .091, singled. O’Hoppe singled to fill the bases and he walked Frazier, forcing in a run.

Reds pitchers issued three walks with the bases loaded.

Burns retired the first two in the third, but Soler doubled and Moncado singled him home to make it 2-0.

Burns retired the first two again in the fourth, but walked number nine hitter Frazer a second straight time and Neto crushed a two-run 417-foot home run over the center field wall to make it 4-1.

Angels pitcher Kochanowicz lost home plate in the fifth when he walked the Reds bottom three, Will Benson, Tyler Stephenson and Ke’Bryan Hayes.

With the bases loaded and one out, the Reds could do damage. They didn’t. TJ Friedl hit a meek ground ball to first that scored Benson, but Matt McLain grounded out.

Friedl and McLain were 0 for 8 and Friedl is 0 for 10 after a three-hit game in Miami.

Burns gave that run right back in the sixth by giving up a leadoff double to Lowe, a brother to Cincinnati’s Nathaniel Lowe, and he scored on Frazier’s single to make it 5-1.

The Angels’ five-run eighth put it away.

Leadoff hitter Neto, hitting .231, had three hits that included his home run.

Moncado, he of the .083 average, was on base four straight times with two walks, a single and a triple.

Lowe, he of the .091 average, had two hits that included a home run.

Kochanowicz (2-0) pitched seven innings and gave up the two singles to Suarez, walked four and struck out two.

[2390
291,5,1165,446,3223,774,56,3224,3222,4,536,185
0":"post-673150","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-los-angeles-angels","8":"tag-angels","9":"tag-baseball","10":"tag-la","11":"tag-la-angels","12":"tag-laangels","13":"tag-los-angeles","14":"tag-los-angeles-angels","15":"tag-losangeles","16":"tag-losangelesangels","17":"tag-mlb","18":"tag-reds","19":"tag-sports
["GET
