That\u2019s a team deciding to be aggressive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For an organization searching for relevance, the Pittsburgh Pirates are acting like a club that wants to compete now \u2014 trusting talent, accelerating timelines, and building around players as they prove ready.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And early on, it\u2019s translating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">They\u2019ve opened the season playing winning baseball \u2014 getting contributions from their young rotation (having <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/paul-skenes-694973?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Skenes<\/a> helps a lot) with just enough offense. It\u2019s a small sample, and by June this could look very different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Rockies are operating in a similar space: more competitive than projected, treading water behind just enough pitching and solid defense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But where Pittsburgh had Griffin and pulled the trigger, Colorado has Charlie Condon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/80879\/colorado-rockies-prospects-no-1-charlie-condon-kris-bryant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 PuRP<\/a>) \u2014 and a lineup that still needs impact.<\/p>\n<p>This lineup isn\u2019t broken \u2014 but it\u2019s still volatile <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">There are stretches where the Rockies\u2019 offense looks competent \u2014 productive and capable of pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-news\/84734\/the-aggressive-nature-of-the-rockies-offense\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">volatility remains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Strikeouts persist. Walk rates are low. And a swing-first approach means consistency can disappear quickly. When the offense is on, it looks pesky. The trio has gone a combined 13-93 (.139) with one home run and a 30% strike-out rate entering Friday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/troy-johnston-687859?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Troy Johnston<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/tyler-freeman-671289\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Freeman<\/a> have hit, but much of their value comes from versatility and time spent in the infield, not as everyday outfield anchors. As a result, the outfield\u2019s offense hasn\u2019t stabilized and is still leaving a clear gap in production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/mickey-moniak-666160?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mickey Moniak<\/a> is the clear exception \u2014 but comes with a massive trade-off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">He\u2019s off to a hot start at the plate, and his bat has been vital. But he shouldn\u2019t be anywhere near a baseball glove. Moniak has struggled defensively throughout his career, and the metrics reflect it. If he\u2019s a key offensive contributor from the grass, the Rockies are accepting defensive risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">That\u2019s not a sustainable equation.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie Condon is ready for the next evaluation <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Condon\u2019s case doesn\u2019t hinge on projection anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">He had a loud spring \u2014 driving the ball with authority \u2014 and has carried that into pro ball. He\u2019s produced at every level, and the power stroke is showing up more consistently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">To begin the minor league season, Condon produced a two-homer, five-RBI game in Oklahoma City on <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fvideo%2Fcharlie-condon-hits-two-homers-tallies-five-rbis%3Fq%3Dcharlie%2520condon%26cp%3DCMS_FIRST%26qt%3DFREETEXT%26p%3D0\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March 29th<\/a>. After a brief absence for a minor procedure to remove a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/us\/wa\/spokane\/news\/2026\/04\/10\/rockies-star-prospect-hitting-homers-again-after-cyst-procedure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cyst<\/a>, he returned to Triple-A Albuquerque and picked up right where he left off:<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The sample is small, but the takeaway is consistent: performance isn\u2019t slowing his timeline. Condon is batting .286\/.405\/.976 through 35 at-bats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">And it\u2019s not just the bat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Condon offers real flexibility \u2014 capable of playing first base or right field, and even sliding into a right-handed DH role at times, potentially pairing with Mickey Moniak as part of a platoon. That kind of versatility makes it easier to find a path to at-bats, not harder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Questions remain, sure. He struck out in 28% of his Double-A plate appearances in 2025, and evaluators still point to recognizing spin as the next hurdle. But those aren\u2019t questions that get answered in Albuquerque. They get answered in the majors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Condon may be the most immediate answer, but he\u2019s not the only one pushing the Rockies toward a decision.<\/p>\n<p>The next wave isn\u2019t one player \u2014 it\u2019s a mix <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Zac Veen (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/80004\/colorado-rockies-prospects-no-9-zac-veen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 9 PuRP<\/a>) feels like the incumbent, even after opening 2026 on the injured list (right knee contusion) and having a tepid start to his season. The version seen this spring looked stronger and more impactful, highlighted by a 468-foot <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fvideo%2Fzac-veen-s-468-foot-walk-off-home-run%3Fq%3Dzac%2520veen%26cp%3DCMS_FIRST%26qt%3DFREETEXT%26p%3D0\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walk-off<\/a> \u2014 if that holds, he can change the lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects\/84800\/colorado-rockies-cole-carrigg-is-honing-his-professionalism\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cole Carrigg<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.purplerow.com\/colorado-rockies-prospects-minor-leagues\/80373\/colorado-rockies-prospects-no-4-cole-carrigg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 4 PuRP<\/a>) offers a different profile; a versatile, high-energy contributor hitting .265 with eight stolen bases at Triple-A, with development centered on refining approach and reducing chase. He\u2019s not the centerpiece. He\u2019s a multiplier.<\/p>\n<p>Timing still matters \u2014 even beyond incentives <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">This isn\u2019t just about service time, but it\u2019s not not about service time either.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">MLB\u2019s Prospect Promotion Incentive (PPI) rewards early promotions with a draft pick, but it comes with guardrails \u2014 Top 100 eligibility, award thresholds, and a one-pick-per-organization cap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">For Condon, the decision is likely more traditional: service time, where teams balance long-term control against present-day impact and development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Some organizations still manage timelines carefully; others \u2014 like Pittsburgh with Griffin \u2014 are accelerating them. The Rockies are somewhere in between.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, it\u2019s about belief <\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Rockies have taken real steps forward \u2014 they\u2019re more competitive, the lineup has flashes, and there\u2019s something worth building on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But the next step is reinforcing that progress, not waiting on it. Development still matters, but the most important questions get answered against major league pitching.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">If this team is going to reward the progress it\u2019s already made, it starts by trusting the talent that can push it forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/isotopes-vs-chihuahuas\/2026\/04\/10\/815404\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes 8, El Paso Chihauhaus 10<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Isotopes (6-7) fell 8-10 in El Paso, but the offense continued to show life. Blaine Crim led the way with three hits, including a home run, while Nicky Lopez stayed scorching hot with another three-hit game\u2014pushing his line to .375 with a .929 OPS. Braxton Fulford also chipped in, going 2-for-2 with a home run after entering as a defensive sub in the sixth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">On the mound, Gabriel Hughes had a tough outing, throwing 84 pitches and allowing five runs over 4.1 innings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/yard-goats-vs-fightin-phils\/2026\/04\/10\/818421\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats 6, Reading Fightin Phils 9<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Yard Goats (3-4) couldn\u2019t keep up in Reading, falling to the Fightin Phils 6-9. Connor Capel provided one of the few highlights, going deep to supply some early offense, but pitching told the story. Konner Eaton battled through 5.1 innings and was tagged for five earned runs, while Davison Palermo surrendered four more earned runs in just 1.2 innings of relief, putting the game out of reach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/gameday\/indians-vs-hops\/2026\/04\/10\/819308\/final\/box\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">High-A: Spokane Indians 9, Hillsboro Hops 11<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The Indians (3-4) dropped a high-scoring game to the Hops. Jacob Humphrey led the way on offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Max Belyeu added two hits and two RBIs of his own \u2014 both staying hot early in the season. But despite the run support, pitching couldn\u2019t hold up. Jackson Cox got the start and allowed four earned runs over four innings, though he did rack up eight strikeouts. Ethan Holliday went 2-for-5 and launched his first home run of the season, an encouraging sign as he looks to get going early in the year. On the mound, JB Middleton was excellent.
