The Astros’ pitching staff cannot prevent teams from scoring, and now, their lineup is taking hits, as shortstop Jeremy Pena was forced out of the team’s loss to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night early with a knee injury.

Considering how things are currently going for Houston, an extended absence for Pena is pretty much the last thing this team needs. After the game, Pena revealed that he was pulled simply as a precaution, but he could still be forced to miss time, as he will undergo more tests on Sunday to determine the severity of his new ailment.

Jeremy Pena Weighs in on Injury Status

Jeremy Peña said he was removed as a precaution and will get imaging tomorrow.

While the Astros have lost quite a bit of talent over the past few years, the emergence of Pena has helped keep the team afloat. As a rookie, Pena helped Houston win the World Series in 2022, with his efforts even earning him the World Series MVP Award. Since then, Pena has remained a steady source of offense for his team.

Pena put together his first All-Star campaign in 2025, as he hit .304 with 17 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 20 stolen bases. The 2026 campaign is still young, but to this point, Pena has been fairly quiet, as he’s hitting .256 without recording a single RBI. That will change, but even with Houston’s offense hitting the ball well, Pena has been notably quiet.

Now, he has a new injury to worry about that could force him to miss time. Pena revealed after the game that he felt his knee tightening up, which is why manager Joe Espada ultimately decided to remove him from the game. While Pena doesn’t seem too concerned about it, he’s going to get more imaging done, which will ultimately determine whether or not he needs a trip to the injured list.

“I just felt the back of my knee tightening up,” Pena said in the clubhouse. “They took me out of the game as a precaution. We’re gonna get some imaging done tomorrow, and we’ll go from there.”

Astros to Keep Close Tabs on Jeremy Pena’s Injury Status

GettyHOUSTON, TEXAS – JUNE 25: Jeremy Pena #3 of the Houston Astros reacts after a double in the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Daikin Park on June 25, 2025 in Houston, Texas. Over the past week, pitchers Hunter Brown and Cristian Javier have both hit the injured list, with outfielder Jake Meyers also joining them. While relievers Bennett Sousa and Josh Hader appear to be closing in on a return to action, first baseman Christian Walker is also dealing with his own injury issues that could land him on the injured list.

The Astros will be hoping for some good news once the latest tests on Pena’s injury are run, because the last thing they could use right now is another player on the injured list. Regardless of his status, Houston will be looking to get a much-needed win on Sunday, as it will aim to avoid a sweep against the Mariners.

Owen Crisafulli Owen Crisafulli is an Email Newsletter Editor & Breaking News Writer at Heavy Sports.
