The New York Yankees are on the verge of being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>. On Sunday, Jazz<\/a> Chisholm Jr. had a late-inning blunder that cost the Yankees the game, and when speaking with media after the game, Chisholm owned up to not quite understanding the double play rules.<\/p>\n

Not the best look for Jazz, who is off to a slow start and in the midst of a contract year. New York has lost four straight games, and that \u2018hot\u2019 start they were off to in the first week is now meaningless.<\/p>\n

So, what did Jazz say? And how bad was it really?<\/p>\n

Per Bryan Hoch, Jazz explained<\/a> what happened on that final play, and the confusion surrounding it:<\/p>\n

\u201cI was really going to go try to tag the runner and just throw it to first. I don\u2019t know what the rule is. If I went to first base first and threw it back to second, if it\u2019s still an out. Is it still a double play? I don\u2019t know. Does it count as not an RBI?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jazz\u2019s teammate, Trent Grisham, then chimed in with the explanation that the runner would score before the tag is applied.<\/p>\n

Chris Kirschner then circled back<\/a> with Jazz on the play, and Chisholm had this to say:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only play at that point, you can\u2019t get Chandler at home. The best thing I was going to do is try to swing at (Yandy) and hopefully he backed out of the line and they call him out of the baseline and throw it to first base and get that double play. That was the best chance we had. If I didn\u2019t get the tag or the out of the baseline, it would\u2019ve been the same result. I don\u2019t know if he was close. I don\u2019t know. You guys would have to tell me because I didn\u2019t get to really look up. The ball was on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a tough look for Chisholm, undoubtedly, but Yankees fans will almost 100% try to scapegoat Jazz for the underlying issues with this current team.<\/p>\n

Yankees Desperately Need A Confidence Boost<\/p>\n

It seems like the Yankees could really use a confidence boost after last week\u2019s losing stretch.<\/p>\n

Aaron Judge isn\u2019t hitting at the clip the Yankees need him to, but surely that will even out.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s all in the margins, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. is one of those \u2018margin\u2019 players that the Yankees are counting on to produce.<\/p>\n

Getting Gerrit Cole back will be a big boost to the starting rotation, and that could be the boost that New York needs.<\/p>\n
