And the one who went down on strikes in nearly 30 percent of his 59 at-bats entering Sunday&#8217;s series finale against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/milwaukee-brewers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a> at American Family Field.<\/p>\n<p>The Nationals&#8217; front office has a decision to make on Wood&#8217;s future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Wood is playing on a one-year, $806,900 contract, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/73324\/james-wood\/contract\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to Spotrac.com<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While still an inconsistent free swinger, Wood&#8217;s potential could make him one of the league&#8217;s top trade targets this summer. His current hot streak, including two RBI Saturday, could up the ante.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals&#8217; James Wood playing for big contract<\/p>\n<p>As a 30-home run hitter in his early 20s, several clubs, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/mlb\/san-diego-padres\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego Padres<\/a>, who opened the season slowly, could make a move to acquire Wood.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25412440-10-best-mlb-trade-chips-2026-season\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Padres showed early interest<\/a> in the player they initially drafted.<\/p>\n<p>At 6-foot-6, 234 pounds, Wood compiled a combined exit velocity and hard-hit rate that finished in the 98th percentile last season. When he makes contact, that is.<\/p>\n<p>With patience, Wood could evolve into a franchise cornerstone who remains arbitration-eligible through 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The Nationals&#8217; brass will soon be forced to decide on Wood&#8217;s future.
