The Nittany Lions were back on the road after winning their sole home game of the week against FDU on Tuesday. Penn State looked to use this momentum to get back on the winning side of conference play against rival Ohio State.<\/p>\n
After falling behind 5-0 after the second inning, Penn State used 10 hits to mount a comeback, opening the series with a 10-6 win against the Buckeyes.<\/p>\n
Colin Fitzgerald took the bump for Penn State after a quick three-and-out at the top of the first. The Lititz, Pennsylvania, native fell behind early after a solo shot from Noah Furcht gave the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n
Ohio State began to threaten once again in the second. After a Lee Ellis double off the right field wall, Maddix Simpson was able to get him across the plate with a single into left field. The bleeding would only get worse. Miles Vandenheuvel launched a three-run homer over the left field wall, ending a four-run inning.<\/p>\n
The Nittany Lions needed a spark from their offense early after falling behind 5-0 headed into the third inning. Signs of life came off the bat of Kevin Karstetter after he tripled off the right-center wall. Avery Smith was able to score him from third off a sacrifice fly into center field.<\/p>\n
Fitzgerald was able to escape a jam with runners on first and third. After his third strikeout of the game and a flyout into left, the senior was able to escape unscathed, keeping the deficit at four runs.<\/p>\n
Penn State led off with an extra-base hit for the second-straight inning in the fourth. Michael Anderson doubled down the left field line. Bryce Molinaro followed suit with a two-run homer over the center field wall, cutting the Buckeyes’ lead to two runs. The Drums, Pennsylvania, native is now tied for third in program home runs.<\/p>\n
A momentum shift towards the Nittany Lions continued into the home half of the fourth. After facing another threatening situation with runners in scoring position, the defense was able to get out with any additional damage, keeping it a two-run game into the fifth inning.<\/p>\n
Anderson brought Penn State\u2019s deficit to only one run after a towering 438-foot solo home run cleared the center field wall. The Havertown, Pennsylvania, native now leads the Big Ten in homers with 14.<\/p>\n
Fitzgerald\u2019s day came to a close in the sixth inning as Ben Demell relieved the starter. The Concord, Ohio, native was able to keep momentum on the side of the Nittany Lions after pitching a scoreless inning.<\/p>\n
What was once a 5-0 deficit for the blue and white was completely erased in the seventh inning. After a game-tying RBI single from Smith, Anderson came to the plate with bases loaded. The heavy-hitting righty made no mistake as he hit a line drive into left, scoring two. The Nittany Lions crawled their way back and took a 7-5 lead.<\/p>\n
Ohio State immediately threatened to answer the three-run inning from Penn State. Reliever Kyle Emmons was brought in after a wild pitch from Dimond Loosli brought the Buckeyes within one. Emmons entered the game with bases loaded and two outs. The Pasadena, Maryland, native finished the inning with a strikeout.<\/p>\n
The Nittany Lions used the eighth inning to add some insurance runs. Karstetter cleared the center field wall with a three-run home run, his first as a Penn Stater.<\/p>\n
Penn State entered the home half of the eighth with a commanding 10-6 lead. Emmons remained in the game and was successful in retiring the Ohio State batters in order.<\/p>\n
Anderson reached second off an error on a throw to first. However, three straight strikeouts ended the top of the ninth. Penn State headed into the bottom of the ninth, three outs away from completing a comeback.<\/p>\n
Emmons stayed on the mound to close out the game. The reliever made quick work of the remaining Buckeyes batters and completed a 10-6 comeback win for Penn State.<\/p>\n
