Rockies Report, Game 16:<\/p>\n

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Forced to adapt and go to a bullpen game when Kyle Freeland was scratched early Sunday due to left-posterior shoulder soreness<\/a>, the Rockies fell behind in the bottom of the first inning and never caught up, tumbling to a 7-2 defeat and a four-game sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.<\/p>\n

But the real story was the Rox\u2019 quiet offense. Five Padres pitchers combined to stifle Colorado\u2019s bats, limiting them to just two hits \u2014 one of which was a 2-RBI double from catcher Brett Sullivan<\/a> that accounted for all of the Rockies offense and brought them within 3-2 in the fifth inning.<\/p>\n

San Diego quickly rebuilt and expanded its edge, adding a fifth-inning run on a Manny Machado single, two sixth-inning runs via Ram\u00f3n Laureano\u2019s two-run homer and a final run in the seventh on Jackson Merrill\u2019s solo shot.<\/p>\n

Those runs represented four of the five tacked on at the expense of Valente Bellozo, who tossed 90 pitches over 4 1\/3 innings in his third Rockies appearance this season, and his most-extensive work since the home opener<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Colorado is 6-10.<\/p>\n

ROCKIES STARTER\u2019S REPORT<\/p>\n

Jimmy Herget got the assignment of opening the game, and even though he bore minimal responsibility for the defeat, he ended up absorbing the statistical loss after Machado drove home Laureano with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Laureano reached base when Herget plunked him with an 0-2, 91-MPH fastball.<\/p>\n

It was just the second run off Herget in eight appearances so far this year. His WHIP still sits at 0.78 for the season despite the rough first inning.<\/p>\n

Freeland is considered \u201cday-to-day,\u201d Schaeffer told media after the game. He will be evaluated Monday.<\/p>\n

BITS AND PIECES<\/p>\n

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Merrill went deep in the seventh to put the Rox down five runs.<\/p>\n

NUMBER TO NOTE: 14 \u2014 Rockies who failed to reach base before Ezequiel Tovar was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning, starting a two-out rally that resulted in Sullivan\u2019s RBI double. The top three spots in Colorado\u2019s order went a combined 0-for-12.<\/p>\n

WHAT\u2019S NEXT: An off-day before heading to Houston to start a three-game series at Daikin Park. Starting pitchers are TBD for Tuesday night\u2019s game, which will begin at 6:10 p.m. MDT.<\/p>\n
