The New York Mets were swept by the Athletics on Sunday in a disappointing loss that marked their fifth in a row.<\/p>\n

And while the season is still early, following a major overhaul in Queens and the reset of some lofty expectations, the team\u2019s five-game losing streak could be a significant cause for concern.<\/p>\n

However, when asked about any challenges that the losing streak presents as the Mets prepare to take on the juggernaut Los Angeles Dodgers, star infielder Bo Bichette quickly pointed to his history with the Toronto Blue Jays.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, I mean, I\u2019ve been part of big expectations and I\u2019ve been a part of slower starts offensively,\u201d Bichette responded in postgame comments shared by SNY on Sunday<\/a>. \u201cI mean, nobody likes losing, I mean that\u2019s the best I can put it. But I think if we got our heads down or worry too much about this then we\u2019ve got bigger issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before joining the Mets on a three-year, $126 million contract with two chances to opt out<\/a>, Bichette spent seven seasons as the everyday shortstop for the Blue Jays and he certainly experienced some intense ups and downs with his previous franchise.<\/p>\n

Expectations for his former team were often high, particularly after Bichette emerged as an All-Star talent alongside franchise slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2021. And the team had its fair share of disappointments as well, including first-round playoff exits in 2020, 2022 and 2023 and then a failure to reach the postseason at all in 2024.<\/p>\n

Bichette endured a harsh slump at the plate in that 2024 season, though he bounced back as one of the sport\u2019s best hitters last year as the Blue Jays enjoyed their most successful campaign in several decades.<\/p>\n

But even though Bichette can point to some significant experience with his previous team, there are new expectations and challenges that come with his high-value contract.<\/p>\n

At $42 million, Bichette is now earning the highest average annual value (AAV)<\/a> of all infielders in the sport. But as he transitions to third base for the first time in his career, he is slashing just .235\/.284\/.309 as the Mets struggle to find an offensive rhythm.<\/p>\n

With Bichette and the Mets looking to turn things around against the most talented team in the majors, he will have to hope that some of the lessons he\u2019s already learned in his career to date can start paying off soon.<\/p>\n
