A recent development for the San Diego Padres<\/a> this week is Nick Pivetta being removed from his last start due to elbow soreness. How does this concern the New York Mets<\/a>? Well, the Mets could use some pitching reinforcements, and Pivetta was recently floated as a trade candidate for the Mets.<\/p>\n

In a recent MLB mock trade idea by SI.com\u2019s Ryan Shea,<\/a> the Mets and Padres link up on a blockbuster trade that would send Nick Pivetta to Queens in exchange for Ronny Mauricio and Christian Scott. Mauricio hasn\u2019t seen much MLB<\/a> time as a young infielder, and Christian Scott has not pitched in MLB since 2024.<\/p>\n

Should the Mets Trade for Nick Pivetta?

GettyNick Pivetta left Sunday\u2019s outing against the Rockies<\/a> with an injury<\/p>\n

Nick Pivetta is a 33-year-old starter who is tied to a four-year, $55 million contract. Early reports indicate he may opt out of his current deal after the season\u2019s end, but that may be in jeopardy if he\u2019s injured.<\/p>\n

In 2025, Pivetta made 31 starts for the Padres and posted a stellar 2.87 ERA over 181.2 innings. This season, Pivetta has made four starts and given up eight earned runs with 24 strikeouts.<\/p>\n

It might be a good move for the Mets to offload Ronny Mauricio for another arm to their pitching staff. Mauricio was recently DFA\u2019d again after the recent Tommy Pham news, which makes his path back up to the majors even tougher.<\/p>\n

This is also a really good trade package for the Mets to give up in a potential deal. Two players who don\u2019t have much of a role with the Mets for a starter in Pivetta, who has been durable over the past several seasons.<\/p>\n

Sorry to all the Mets fans who may be tired of these *semi-baseless* rumors, but due to New York\u2019s uber-aggressive MLB offseason, rumors and speculation will continue to persist throughout the season.<\/p>\n

But do the Mets need to make a panic move after their slow start?<\/p>\n

No, but New York could use additional help in the pitching staff.<\/p>\n

Shea explains why Pivett<\/a>a could be a good fit in New York:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Mets make this trade because they are in win-now mode and need to maximize their rotation stability for a playoff push. Adding Nick Pivetta gives them a proven strikeout arm who can step into the middle of the rotation immediately. Even with some volatility, his ability to miss bats and handle a starter\u2019s workload helps shorten games and gives the Mets a stronger chance in both the regular season and October-style matchups.\u201d<\/p>\n
