PHILADELPHIA \u2014 The Phillies lost a key piece of their bullpen Monday when they placed right-hander Jonathan Bowlan on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain.<\/p>\n
The Phillies acquired Bowlan, 29, from Kansas City in the offseason in exchange for lefty Matt Strahm. In seven relief appearances, he\u2019s 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA, eight strikeouts and a walk in seven innings.<\/p>\n
Over his last four games, he didn\u2019t allow a run and was holding hitters to a .143 batting average (2-for-14).<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very mild,\u201d manager Rob Thomson said of Bowlan\u2019s injury. \u201cHe actually felt it after the outing (Sunday against Arizona). He felt it a little bit, and then he came in here and tried to stretch it out and just kind of made it a little bit worse. \u2026 It\u2019s just to take precautions. We\u2019ll get him back soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
To replace Bowlan o the 26-man roster, the Phillies called up right-handed fireballer Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old Johnson has posted a 3.00 ERA with two saves, 11 strikeouts and three walks in six innings pitched for the IronPigs this season. His average velocity of 98.3 mph on his four-seam fastball this year ranks sixth among Triple-A pitchers to throw at least 25 four-seamers.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s powering the ball through the zone, which is what we wanted him to do,\u201d Thomson said. \u201cBecause his stuff\u2019s always been there. I think the secondary pitches have gotten a little bit better. The changeup\u2019s really improved. So he\u2019s more effective against left-handed hitting. He\u2019s throwing strikes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe velocity\u2019s always been there. It\u2019s just been a little bit scattered. So he\u2019s kind of reeled in his command a little bit and control.\u201d<\/p>\n
During spring training, the Memphis-area native had a 1.86 ERA and held batters to a .176 average (6-for-34) in eight appearances (one start) over 9 2\/3 innings. Johnson pitched in 10 games through three stints for the Phillies in 2025 and earned his first major league win last July 19 against the Los Angeles Angels.<\/p>\n

Thomson is still looking for the right mix in his lineup, but it has been difficult with several guys struggling. On Monday, he moved right fielder Adolis Garcia to the cleanup spot, which he had signaled might be coming.<\/p>\n
Entering the series against the Cubs, the Phillies had produced hits in four of their last 46 innings.<\/p>\n
