{"id":677526,"date":"2026-04-17T10:09:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T10:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/677526\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T10:09:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T10:09:29","slug":"pirates-paul-skenes-has-strong-stance-on-abs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/677526\/","title":{"rendered":"Pirates&#8217; Paul Skenes Has Strong Stance on ABS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">PITTSBURGH \u2014 Paul Skenes has dominated almost every challenge he&#8217;s faced in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, but has a different one this year that out of the realm of what he can control.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">MLB introduced the ABS challenge system with ABS standing for, &#8220;Automated Ball-Strike&#8221;, which allows players to challenge the home plate umpire&#8217;s call of a ball or a strike. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">The league uses five Hawk-Eye cameras at all 30 MLB stadiums, which are there for Statcast, which track the movement of the baseball and determine whether the call was correct or not.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">While some players have had their issues with ABS, Skenes likes the new system, which he sees benefitting everyone.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty cool,&#8221; Skenes said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48486702\/mlb-2026-automated-ball-strike-challenge-system-rule-players-weigh-in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ESPN<\/a>. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s been super one-sided where the pitchers are getting a lot more than the hitters. It feels right so far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">MLB teams have two challenges each game for ABS and lose them if they are wrong and retain them if they are right. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">ABS determines whether a ball is a strike if it touches even any part of the strike zone and even if the ball is mostly outside of it, as long as it touches it, it will be called a strike.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">&#8220;The strike zone is the strike zone,&#8221; Skenes said in support of ABS. &#8220;A tenth of an inch inside the zone is still a strike. I wouldn&#8217;t change anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How Pirates Have Fared with ABS So Far<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">The Pirates have used ABS this season with it going their way at times and other times not.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">Two Pirates pitchers have made ABS challenges, with right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/pirates\/onsi\/news\/bubba-chandler-track-record-give-pittsburgh-pirates-faith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bubba Chandler<\/a> successful on his and left-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/pirates\/onsi\/news\/new-reliever-gregory-soto-perfect-bullpen-addition-pittsburgh-pirates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gregory Soto<\/a> not successful on his. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kpa7b9je5zs50cjz96.jpg\" alt=\"Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler\" title=\"Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler\" width=\"4727\" height=\"2658\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"7m\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Apr 6, 2026; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA;  Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Bubba Chandler (36) delivers a pitch against the San Diego Padres during the first inning at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images | Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7q\">Chandler&#8217;s came in his most recent appearance, where he tipped his ball cap, but not intentionally, as that is a normal gesture from him on the mound.
