A top pitching prospect in Double-A is one thing, but a true major league ace with a chip on his shoulder is the kind of beast no Double-A hitter is equipped to handle. It’s the kind of thing that could throw off a youngster’s confidence – though, on the other side of things, getting the best of him put some serious wind in a prospect’s sails.<\/p>\n
The Phillies have a couple of important young hitters down in Reading that they will hope aren’t abused by Cole. A hot start to 2026 by Aroon Escobar could put Bryson Stott’s job in question<\/a>, while Dante Nori’s World Baseball Classic run put him on the map as a prospect who could be on the rise<\/a>.<\/p>\n Cole looked like a hurler who was already back at vintage levels<\/a> over his brief spring training appearance, and will represent a unique challenge for these two top-10 Phillies’ prospects, as well as the rest of the Reading squad.<\/p>\n The Yankees are paying the Phillies back for having to face Zack Wheeler with a Gerrit Cole rehab start<\/p>\n It was only a couple of days ago that the Phillies sent Zack Wheeler out to the mound to take on the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, as the ace works his way back from surgery to deal with thoracic outlet syndrome.<\/p>\n The Phillies ace looked good for the most part in his fourth rehab start, striking out nine, though he was victimized by the Yankees’ top prospect, George Lombard Jr., who launched a two-run double off of the veteran, and left Wheeler impressed<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now, in a rarity, the Yankees will be sending out a comparable rehabbing ace in the same series with Cole, making it seem as if they’re looking for payback for their youngsters having to go up against Wheeler.<\/p>\n If Cole mows down Reading, it won’t be a shock, but it will be interesting to see if any Philly prospects show out against the 35-year-old, potentially setting themselves up for a breakout in the process. What is guaranteed is that this six-game Double-A series has featured some truly rare starpower for us to enjoy.<\/p>\n
