{"id":677619,"date":"2026-04-17T12:48:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T12:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/677619\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T12:48:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T12:48:22","slug":"mike-trout-is-back-where-he-belongs-and-it-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/677619\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Trout Is Back Where He Belongs, and It Shows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">NEW YORK \u2014 When Kurt Suzuki was hired as Angels manager this offseason, Mike Trout braced for their first\u2014and in some ways, most important\u2014conversation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">It lasted about 30 seconds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">\u201cWhat position do you want to play?\u201d Suzuki asked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">\u201cCenter field,\u201d Trout said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">\u201cO.K.,\u201d Suzuki said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7i\">\u201cReally?\u201d Trout said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7l\">\u201cYeah!\u201d Suzuki said. \u201cYou\u2019re frickin\u2019 Mike Trout!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7o\">Six months later, sitting in the dugout as Trout takes batting practice at Yankee Stadium, Suzuki smiles. \u201cI\u2019m not saying he needs the reminder,\u201d the manager says. \u201cBut sometimes in this game, you can take a hit a little bit, cause it\u2019s a hard game, and you need a reminder sometimes: I am a three-time MVP. I am Mike Trout. You see it: Watch his BP, watch him run. He\u2019s still got it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7r\">If Trout\u2014or the sport\u2014needed a reminder, the first three weeks of the season <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/angels\/mike-trout-once-again-demanding-your-attention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have provided one<\/a>. Trout entered play Thursday ranked ninth among position players in Baseball Reference\u2019s calculation of WAR. He socked five home runs in four games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/yankees\/aaron-judge-mike-trout-history-lou-gehrig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">against the Yankees<\/a>\u2014becoming the first ever opposing player to homer on four consecutive days at either Yankee Stadium\u2014including two game-tying dingers and two more that gave his team the lead. He missed 382 of a possible 648 games from 2021 through \u201924 amid injuries to his right calf, his back, his left hamate bone and his left meniscus. He went from an automatic All-Star to a frequent flyer on the injured list. His story became one of unfulfilled potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"80\">But somehow, at 34, he is playing like he hasn\u2019t in years. He has tweaked his swing, stepping back just before his forward move. He has slimmed down. But his favorite change is that he is back to playing center field.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kpc2qwxsc777y83mcr.jpg\" alt=\"Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout watches his two run home run against the New York Yankees\" title=\"Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout watches his two run home run against the New York Yankees\" width=\"3731\" height=\"2098\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8a\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Trout\u2019s move back to center field has coincided with a vintage start at the plate. | Brad Penner-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8e\">The Angels had increased his days at designated hitter in recent years, and after years of discussing the change internally\u2014sometimes to Trout\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/angels\/story\/2022-03-14\/mike-trout-left-field-joe-maddon-angels-season#:~:text=One%20day%20after%20manager%20Angels,and%20general%20manager%20Perry%20Minasian.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consternation<\/a>\u2014they moved him to right field last season in an attempt to keep him healthy. But Trout hates DHing\u2014he stews over his at-bats without anything to distract him\u2014and he felt that playing right was actually harder on him than playing center. Center field is more physically taxing, but he found right more mentally exhausting, because nothing was automatic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8h\">\u201cBeing new to the position, it takes time to get to that comfort zone,\u201d Trout says. He always felt like he was thinking instead of just reacting. He prefers center, he says, because, \u201cIf I\u2019m not getting any hits, I try to take some hits away from other guys.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8k\">Besides, as Suzuki says, he\u2019s frickin\u2019 Mike Trout. He\u2019s a center fielder. He made 11 All-Star Games in center field. He won three MVP awards in center field. He became the best player in the sport in center field. Did he lose some of his identity in right? He thinks for a minute. \u201cThere\u2019s something there,\u201d he acknowledges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8n\">And as for the injury risk of roaming those big center fields, the Angels hope it\u2019s overstated. \u201cIf you\u2019re mentally relaxed, maybe your body stays healthy?\u201d Suzuki muses. \u201cI don\u2019t know, but it might have something to do with the stress, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8q\">Trout and Suzuki have agreed that Trout will be honest with himself and with the staff about how his body feels. \u201cI told him, \u2018Mike, you need a day, you come tell me,\u2019\u201d says the manager. \u201cIf not, you\u2019re gonna be in center field, hitting second for the Halos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8t\">So far, Trout and the Angels are thrilled with the arrangement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8w\">\u201cIt\u2019s really good for the sport,\u201d Suzuki says. \u201cIt\u2019s Mike Trout.
