Brandon Williamson expects at least 15% of the population of his hometown to be at the ballpark tonight in Minnesota as the Cincinnati Reds face the Twins. <\/p>\n
The low on the weather forecast is 29 degrees tonight, and there are going to be 25 mph winds. But if you\u2019re from Trimont, Minnesota, you can\u2019t miss this start. <\/p>\n
Williamson is the first baseball player from his county to pitch in the big leagues, and tonight he\u2019s pitching an MLB game in his home state for the first time.<\/p>\n
The population of Trimont is 700 people, and Williamson expects over 100 at the game tonight. <\/p>\n
It\u2019s a two-and-a-half hour drive from Trimont to Minneapolis. It\u2019s a drive that a lot of Trimont residents are making right now. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s awesome,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cIt\u2019s \u2018Bring All of my Close Friends and Family to Work Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Who\u2019s going to be at the game tonight? <\/p>\n
\u201cEverybody,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cEveryone knows everyone down there (Trimont is in southern Minnesota). Anyone that\u2019s been around and followed me and shot me a text, they\u2019re pretty excited to come. And I\u2019m excited to see them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since it\u2019s going to be such a cold night and since the rebuilding Twins aren\u2019t drawing big crowds right now, the Brandon Williamson fans might make more noise than the Twins fans at the ballpark tonight.<\/p>\n
Williamson said that everyone in Trimont has become Reds\u2019 fans. <\/p>\n
\u201cI love it,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n
When he was a kid, the fields that Williamson played on during the summer were pretty good. But you don\u2019t get to be outside for a lot of the year when you live in cold weather Minnesota. Growing up, his indoor practice site was the abandoned gym of an abandoned high school.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou couldn\u2019t go in the classrooms because they had asbestos,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n
Three other players from Williamson\u2019s county went on to play college baseball, but he was the best of the bunch and is the lone big leaguer in the group. <\/p>\n
What do you do in Trimont? <\/p>\n
Williamson recommends Bergen, a local steakhouse. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s in the country,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cThere are like three buildings. There\u2019s a butcher shop, a steakhouse and a house. That\u2019s it. It\u2019s in the middle of nowhere. It\u2019s got the best steaks in the state. Give it a Google. Take a look at it.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Trimont, there are no stoplights. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s maybe two hours from everything,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cI grew up in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
He had 50 students in his high school class at Martin County West, but his high school included kids from across three different towns in the area. <\/p>\n
His family has lived in Trimont for a long time. <\/p>\n
Williamson\u2019s grandfather owned a farm in town until he died, which was when Williamson\u2019s dad was 10 years old. \u201c(My dad) couldn\u2019t take it over,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cWe sold the farm land. We live on the farm site.\u201dWilliamson\u2019s dad works for the county, grading roads and plowing snow. His mom used to cut hair and is now retired. <\/p>\n
He\u2019ll be representing his family and his entire hometown on the mound tonight at Target Field.<\/p>\n
\u201cPretty special,\u201d Williamson said.<\/p>\n
