Unlike most of their predecessors, the 2026 Boston Red Sox<\/a> were built around run prevention<\/a>. While that strategy hasn’t panned out as hoped<\/a> yet this season, it paid off on Friday.<\/p>\n

The Red Sox tossed their third shutout of the year on Friday, outlasting the Detroit Tigers in a\u00a01-0 nail-biter at Fenway Park to take the series opener and kick off their homestand<\/a> with a victory.<\/p>\n

Boston also notched its first extra-innings and walk-off win of the season, scoring the game’s lone run in the bottom of the\u00a010th on Masataka Yoshida’s pinch-hit single<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yoshida didn’t start the game for the Red Sox, but he finished it, chopping a ball over the Tigers’ drawn-in infield to score Jarren Duran from third with one out.<\/p>\n

That ended a game where both pitching staffs were in complete control. Ranger Suarez fired eight scoreless innings in his best start yet with Boston, while Casey Mize nearly matched him with\u00a06 2\/3 shutout frames.<\/p>\n

Both offenses mustered just four hits apiece, but the Red Sox got the big one when it counted. Yoshida has now hit safely in six straight games<\/a>, raising his average to .310 after starting the year in an 0-for-9 funk.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old veteran is making a case for more consistent playing time with his recent hot streak, as he’s often been the odd man out<\/a> with Boston’s outfield logjam. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for Alex Cora to keep him on the bench, however, especially with the Red Sox starved for offense<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Friday’s victory was the second straight for Boston, which improved to 8-11. However, there’s a good chance the bats will be quiet again on Saturday with reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal on the bump for Detroit.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Red Sox will try to extend their winning streak to three behind Brayan Bello, which would be a season-long for them.<\/p>\n
