{"id":678659,"date":"2026-04-18T21:51:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T21:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/678659\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T21:51:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T21:51:31","slug":"mlb-insider-sends-clear-message-on-padres-fernando-tatis-jr-trade-rumors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/678659\/","title":{"rendered":"MLB Insider Sends Clear Message on Padres&#8217; Fernando Tatis Jr Trade Rumors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">Earlier this week, a rumor surrounding the San Diego Padres potentially wanting to trade Fernando Tatis Jr. surfaced. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">The 27-year-old demonstrated his versatility as he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/padres-manager-explains-shocking-fernando-tatis-jr-position-change\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spent some time as the team&#8217;s starting second baseman.<\/a> He got his first career start at the position and helped the Padres earn a win over the Colorado Rockies. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds believed the move to play Tatis at second wasn&#8217;t just to give Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth days off, but rather a signal for interested teams that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/mlb-analyst-thinks-padres-trying-trade-fernando-tatis-jr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Padres star is on the trade block. <\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">&#8220;I think this is a showcase,&#8221; Reynolds said. &#8220;The Padres payroll \u2014 I know they&#8217;re up there battling the Dodgers every year, we say it over and over and over \u2014 I&#8217;m sorry, they gotta do something. They can&#8217;t carry this payroll. The Dodgers can, [the Padres] can&#8217;t carry this. Somebody&#8217;s gotta go. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">&#8220;So, who of those guys do I want? I want Fernando Tatis.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">While the rumors certainly caught the attention of several people around the league, the notion that the Padres are willing to let go of their biggest star seems to be untrue.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/16\/sports\/this-mets-futility-isnt-on-carlos-mendoza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Heyman of the New York Post<\/a> put those Tatis trade rumors to rest. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"73\">&#8220;Speculation that the Padres are shopping Fernando Tatis Jr. should stop now,&#8221; Heyman wrote. &#8220;Tatis played 2B two games because he can. The Padres intend to contend, as usual.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">When the Padres announced their starting lineup last Saturday with Tatis at second, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/fernando-tatis-jr-reacts-to-surprise-move-to-second-base-on-saturday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">everyone was shocked<\/a>. Naturally, people wondered how often would Tatis be in the infield.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">The Padres star is no stranger to the diamond as he started his MLB career at shortstop, but manager Craig Stammen revealed he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/mlb\/padres\/onsi\/san-diego-padres-news\/padres-manager-reveals-how-often-fernando-tatis-jr-will-play-second-base\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only plans to deploy Tatis at second<\/a> when Bogaerts or Cronenworth need a day off.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7c\">\u201cI think he&#8217;s going to play right field most days,\u201d Stammen said. \u201cBut kind of like what I said earlier today, when Xander needs a day off, or when Jake needs a day off, you know, he\u2019s probably our best option to play second base at the moment.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">Tatis is also a fan of the temporary move to second, despite developing into a Platinum Glove winner in right field. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7i\">\u201cJust the quick action, the quick chances, staying on my feet,\u201d Tatis said of what he liked about playing at second base. \u201cAll of that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>How is Fernando Tatis Jr Performing This Season? <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7o\">Tatis is off to a slow start this season, hitting .239 with zero home runs, 10 runs batted in and an OPS of .625, which would be the lowest in his career by far.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7r\">It&#8217;s been an uncharacteristically slow start for Tatis at the plate, but he&#8217;s been making up for it in the field, both at second base and in right field.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7u\">After playing the first 17 games of the season, Tatis got his first off day of the season in the series finale against the Seattle Mariners.
