The New York Mets<\/a> lost to the Chicago Cubs<\/a> on Saturday, April 18th. That loss was a close 4-2 defeat, and dropped the Mets to a 7-14 record.<\/p>\n

It’s only 21 games into the regular season, and the Mets are in desperation mode. But, even worse than this record already indicates is how the Mets got here. This Cubs loss was their 10th in a row.<\/p>\n

As ESPN’s Jeff Passan<\/a> highlighted following the Mets’ loss, teams that lose 10 games in a row in MLB history typically do not make the playoffs. If history repeats itself, as it often does, the Mets are going to miss the postseason for the second year in a row.<\/p>\n

Mets’ 10-game losing streak is horrible news for postseason odds<\/p>\n

“Four teams in MLB history have lost 10 or more games in a row and made the playoffs,” Passan shared. “The last was the Guardians in 2025. Only one of those teams had a skid in April and still made the postseason: the 1951 Giants, who lost 11 consecutive.. The New York Mets have lost 10 straight.”<\/p>\n

The Mets are in the middle of a major losing streak, dropping 10 straight games, only 21 games into the regular season. A few weeks ago, they were 7-4; now they’re 7-14 and in danger of missing the playoffs already.<\/p>\n

Of course, it’s still incredibly early. And just last year, the Cleveland Guardians<\/a> proved that losing 10 in a row isn’t the end of the Mets’ chances to make the postseason. But it’s a huge hurdle to clear, especially with how bad the offense looks.<\/p>\n

Things could turn around once Juan Soto<\/a> comes back. But, even then, the Mets need Francisco Lindor<\/a>, Bo Bichette<\/a>, and plenty of others to start turning things around this season.<\/p>\n

The Mets of 2026 Opening Day feel long gone. From chasing Paul Skenes<\/a> out of the game in less than an inning, to a 10-game losing streak by mid-April. This has been a strange and brutal start to the season for the Mets.<\/p>\n

There’s one more game against the Cubs on Sunday, where Chicago will send David Peterson<\/a> to face Javier Assad<\/a>. If the Mets cannot win, they will go back to New York with a very real chance to turn things around, as they face the Minnesota Twins<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But if the Mets continue to lose, dropping a game or two to the Twins, things might need drastic changing before the Mets even make it to May.<\/p>\n

Even if they start winning again, history is not on their side after this brutal 10-game losing streak. MLB history is very long, and the Mets would be just the fifth team ever to make the postseason after losing 10 straight if they climb back this year.<\/p>\n
