The season, however, didn&#8217;t start off great.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFlorida went just 4-11 over its first 15 games, but after avoiding the three-game sweep at the hand of the Atlanta Braves, the Marlins started to turn things around with a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. That series started on this day 30 years ago.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tScoreless through seven and a half innings at Joe Robbie Stadium on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/boxes\/ATL\/ATL199604180.shtml\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 19, 1996<\/a>, the Marlin bats finally woke up. Florida scored five times with two outs in the eighth to top the Dodgers, 5-0.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFor seven innings, Los Angeles&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valdeis01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ismael Valdez<\/a> and Florida&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rapppa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Rapp<\/a> had traded zeroes. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/powelja04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Powell<\/a> worked around a two-out walk for Florida in the top of the eighth, the Marlins finally got a crack at the Dodgers&#8217; bullpen.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAgainst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hallda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darren Hall<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/orsuljo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Orsulak<\/a> started the eighth with a single, but the right-hander responded by retiring a couple of big bats. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sheffga01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Sheffield<\/a> popped out, Hall fanned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coninje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Conine<\/a>. The third out, however, proved to be elusive.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pendlte01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Pendleton<\/a> followed with a single to right field, but a misplay by Dodgers outfielder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mondera01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ra\u00fal Mondes\u00ed<\/a> allowed the ball to roll all the way to the wall and for pinch runner\u00a0Jes\u00fas\u00a0Tav\u00e1rez to score. That&#8217;s all Florida would need, but not all it would get.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colbrgr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Colbrunn<\/a> followed with an RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsch04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Johnson<\/a> walked, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abbotku01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-19_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Abbott<\/a>\u00a0belted Hall&#8217;s 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall for a three-run home run to turn what had been a scoreless game into a romp. Hall was able to get Powell, the opposing reliever, to fly out but the damage was done.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRobb Nen retired the top of the Dodgers&#8217; lineup in order to seal the win as the Marlins&#8217; staff hurled a three-hit shutout. Pendleton, Colbrunn and Abbott each finished with two of the 10 Florida hits.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed\" data-fileid=\"5159\" data-ratio=\"20.33\" data-unique=\"o7qwpnrid\" width=\"1328\" alt=\"Screenshot 2026-04-19 at 6.41.49\u202fAM.png\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot2026-04-19at6_41_49AM.png.64c8f5c08d175b8dfb40907aafb2f228.png\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Marlins went on to complete the three-game sweep and closed April by winning seven of 12. The 5-0 victory over the Dodgers was one of three shutouts from the month.
